Flavor Flav Shuts Down Vegas Strip for Women Olympians

Flavor Flav shut down a stretch of the Las Vegas Strip on Thursday. The rapper honored more than 100 female Winter Olympians and Paralympians. His "SHE Weekend" celebration began with a parade from Park MGM to Toshiba Plaza. The four-day event runs through July 19. It centers on the gold medal-winning US women's hockey team. The celebration grew from a February social media post after a controversial White House remark. MGM Resorts, the Palms, StubHub, Delta, and Alaska Airlines backed the celebration.

Strip Parade Draws Thousands, Ends in Free Concert

The parade traveled south, starting just north of Park MGM to Bruno Mars Way. Thousands lined the route as it moved toward Toshiba Plaza outside T-Mobile Arena. Attendance was estimated near 10,000, with about 6,000 along the parade route. The Raiders, Golden Knights, and Aces joined the procession.

Their presence underscored Las Vegas' growing embrace of women's sports.

Clark County officials presented the athletes with ceremonial keys to the Strip. Commissioners had approved the road closure at a May 19 meeting. The night ended with a free concert at Toshiba Plaza. Flavor Flav's group, Public Enemy, headlined the performance. Sheila E and Blu DeTiger also performed.

How Team USA's White House Snub Sparked a Celebration

The celebration dates back to February when President Donald Trump commented on inviting the women's hockey team to the White House. Team USA politely declined. The remark followed the US men's hockey team's own gold medal win. Team USA's women had beaten Canada 2-1 in overtime in Milan. Responding on social media, Flavor Flav demanded a real celebration for the team and offered to host the players in Las Vegas himself. The post drew swift support from corporate sponsors. MGM Resorts, the Palms, StubHub, Delta, and Alaska Airlines soon joined the effort. Together, they helped fund travel, lodging, and logistics for the athletes. The idea expanded into a full weekend of programming across multiple resorts.

Athletes and Officials Reflect on a Historic Weekend

Several athletes called the event historic. Alex Carpenter, a three-time Olympic medalist, said she had never seen this level of celebration for US women. Hayley Scamurra, who recently signed with Las Vegas' PWHL team, called the weekend surreal. Flavor Flav told reporters he wanted young girls watching to feel inspired. "I want all of the little girls to be fighters," he said. MGM Resorts' chief of sales, Stephanie Glanzer, said the company was proud to support the athletes. Clark County Commissioner Jim Gibson noted officials wanted to recognize all athletes. He also cited the Professional Women's Hockey League's planned expansion to Las Vegas. Team USA captain Hillary Knight did not attend the festivities. She was instead in New York for the Time100 Sports Gala.
