Roy Student, Casino Tech Pioneer and GSI Founder, Dies at 83

Roy Student, a pioneering figure in casino technology, died on September 5 at age 83 following a long illness. Student helped build several systems that now define modern casino floors, from player-rating tools to server-based slot networks. His career began in 1972, when his company won a contract to automate accounting for an MGM casino. He later co-founded Gaming Systems International, a pioneer in player-rating systems. Cyberview Technology, which he also led, developed the server-based platform that IGT acquired in 2007. Student is survived by his wife, Judy, sons Glenn and Darren, and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Early Life: Baseball, Judy, and a Move to Vegas

Student was born in the Bronx, New York, in 1943. He grew up playing stickball before becoming a standout baseball player. At Bayside High School in New York, he became a standout player whose performance drew the attention of the New York Yankees. The team offered him a spot in their AAA organization. Student used an athletic scholarship to attend the New York Institute of Technology.

In 1964, he met Judy, and the couple married the following year. Their marriage lasted more than six decades. Student later joined General Instrument Corporation, which eventually brought him to Las Vegas and launched his career in gaming technology.

Building Casino Tech: GSI, Cyberview, and IGT

In 1972, MGM acquired a Las Vegas casino that needed a way to automate floor accounting, including tracking markers and table-game bankrolls. Student's company won that contract, marking his entry into the gaming industry. He later helped establish Gaming Systems International, known as GSI. The company developed player-rating systems still used across casinos today.

Student sold GSI in 2001 and became president of Cyberview Technology.

Cyberview was an early developer of server-based gaming systems linking slot machines to a central server.

IGT acquired Cyberview in 2007. That server-based approach is now standard in casinos worldwide, as well as in online gaming.

Legacy: Consulting, Non-Gaming Revenue, and Honors

Student went on to found Applied Management Strategies. Through it, he consulted for leading gaming companies worldwide. During this period, he became an early advocate for non-gaming revenue. That term describes guest spending beyond tables and slots. His advocacy helped shape modern player rewards programs, which now routinely factor in dining, retail, and entertainment spending alongside wagering.

In 2023, Student's decades of contributions were recognized with an award at ICE London. The event is one of the gaming industry's largest B2B trade shows. His work in player tracking and server-based systems remains embedded in casino operations today. That legacy spans both the casino floor and online gaming platforms worldwide.
