Silver: NBA Weighs Sphere-Style Arena for Las Vegas Team

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said Tuesday that the league is weighing a Sphere-style arena for its Las Vegas expansion team. Silver spoke after Board of Governors meetings in New York. He said owners are weighing an upgraded T-Mobile Arena against a newly built venue. Dallas Mavericks governor and Las Vegas Sands executive Patrick Dumont led talks on arena sites across the valley. Several ownership groups remain active as the league nears a 2026 decision.

Silver Highlights Sphere's Role in Vegas Arena Vision

Silver detailed the discussion in remarks to reporters following the meetings. He said several groups have presented plans to build what he called a "modern entertainment palace" in Las Vegas.

The commissioner also noted, "It's a unique market where you could truly see essentially 365-day-a-year activity."

Silver pointed directly to Sphere's influence on the conversation, saying, "There was some discussion about how much the Sphere has impacted Las Vegas." He called it a technological marvel that has shaped Las Vegas economically and as a showcase. Sphere posted a 38% revenue surge in the first quarter of 2026, reaching $386 million, reinforcing its economic case.

T-Mobile Arena Leads, But Rival Bids Emerge

Silver acknowledged real enthusiasm for keeping the team at T-Mobile Arena. "I think that there is real excitement around either, you know, a renovated T-Mobile Arena…," Silver said. He added the venue would need significant work. "I think everyone acknowledges if a team were to stay there, it still needs some significant improvements," Silver said.

Golden Knights owner Bill Foley has pledged roughly $300 million toward T-Mobile Arena upgrades in his ownership bid. Las Vegas officials recently extended the NBA Summer League deal at the arena through 2028 for $4.25 million. Multiple ownership groups, including a Las Vegas Jacks bid backed by Jerry Colangelo, have proposed alternative arena sites.

Expansion Bidding Hits $10B as 2026 Decision Nears

The NBA's Board of Governors voted in March to formally explore expansion into Las Vegas and Seattle. "Today's vote reflects our Board's interest in exploring potential expansion," Silver said in a statement. The league hired investment bank PJT Partners to evaluate markets, ownership groups, and arena plans. Silver has set the end of 2026 as his target for a final decision.

Bidding for the Las Vegas franchise has reportedly reached the $10 billion range, exceeding earlier estimates. Teams could begin play in the 2028-29 season, with an expansion draft expected in 2028. Seattle remains the league's second expansion market, though talks there have drawn less attention.
