Sphere Unveils Wizard of Oz 2.0 for September Debut

Sphere Entertainment is preparing an upgraded version of its hit Las Vegas show. "The Wizard of Oz" 2.0 is set to premiere in September. Chairman and CEO James Dolan revealed the plans during the company's second-quarter earnings call. The enhanced show will introduce new scenes featuring the witch and flying monkeys. Dolan said guests can expect to "go for a ride with a witch" and encounter "new kinds of flying monkeys." The update arrives as the original production nears its first anniversary at Sphere. It has already drawn millions of visitors and generated hundreds of millions in ticket revenue.

Original "Wizard of Oz" Show Draws Millions in Vegas

The original "Wizard of Oz" experience opened at Sphere on Aug. 28, 2025. It reimagined the 1939 film using the venue's massive wraparound screen. A team from Google DeepMind collaborated with film and live-event specialists to retool the production. The adaptation took roughly two years to complete. Producer Jane Rosenthal and the estate of Judy Garland were also involved. By this summer, the show had sold nearly 3.6 million tickets and generated about $450 million in total sales. Dolan called the show's performance strong despite typical summer slowdowns in Las Vegas tourism. He said demand for the production remains high heading into its second year.

Sphere Teases New Scenes, Plans Show's Long Vegas Run

Dolan did not release full details about the new 2.0 version during the call. He confirmed the update will include fresh scenes involving the witch. New styles of flying monkeys will also appear in the reimagined sequences.

The current show already features drone-controlled monkeys and wind machines simulating a tornado, immersing guests inside Sphere's massive interior space.

Dolan said he expects the enhanced version to extend the show's popularity, adding that demand for the original production remains strong. The company plans to keep running "The Wizard of Oz" for years. Dolan compared its potential lifespan to "O," the long-running Cirque du Soleil show at Bellagio.

The Venue's Global Expansion: New Cities, New Shows

The 2.0 rollout comes as Sphere Entertainment expands its global footprint. Sphere Entertainment is developing a full-sized venue in Abu Dhabi on Yas Island. Construction is underway and expected to finish by the end of 2029. Sphere is also planning a smaller venue near Washington, D.C., in National Harbor, Maryland. Financing talks for that project are ongoing. Dolan said "The Wizard of Oz" could eventually play at future Sphere locations worldwide. The company is also developing another immersive title called "From the Edge." Revenue for the Sphere segment reached $226.4 million in the second quarter, up nearly 30% from the same period last year.
