Las Vegas F1 Grand Prix Deal Locked in Through 2037

Clark County commissioners voted unanimously on May 19 to extend the Formula 1 Las Vegas Grand Prix contract through 2037. The resolution extends the county's existing agreement with F1 by 10 years, an arrangement that first brought the modern Grand Prix to the Strip in 2023. Officials framed the decision as a long-term investment in a globally recognized sporting event. Race organizers cite over $2 billion in combined economic impact across the first two editions, covering visitor spending, hotel occupancy, temporary employment, and tax revenue generated during race week.

F1 Las Vegas Economic Impact by the Numbers

The financial returns behind the extension are substantial. The inaugural 2023 race generated an estimated $1.5 billion in economic impact. The 2024 edition followed with $934 million in economic impact. Those figures span a broad range of activity, from casino and hotel revenues to sportsbook handle, which surged notably during both race weekends.

County officials pointed to sustained tourism demand and Las Vegas's growing international profile as key motivators. Supporters argue the event keeps Las Vegas competitive for high-end visitors on a global stage.

The combined two-year total crossing the $2 billion mark made extending the contract a straightforward call for commissioners.

How F1 Race Prep Hurts Local Businesses and Residents

Despite the headline figures, the economic picture is more complicated at street level. The three-month construction window required to set up and restore the 3.8-mile Strip circuit repeatedly disrupts access to hotels, restaurants, and retail shops. Road closures, lane reductions, and extended detours add hours to daily commutes for workers in the area.

Unlike affected businesses, residents receive no financial compensation for these disruptions. Several businesses filed lawsuits against the county and race organizers over lost revenue, most of which ended in confidential settlements. Critics argue that financial gains are concentrated among large casino operators while smaller businesses absorb the costs.

F1 Critics Speak Out as County Sets Stricter Terms

Community frustration has not gone unnoticed. Commissioner Michael Naft acknowledged the strain before the vote. "The Grand Prix needs to condense the timeline," he said, adding that the county must hold F1 to stricter scheduling and coordination requirements. County staff noted some improvement in the 2024 race, with certain construction phases finishing earlier than in 2023. Still, commissioners stressed that long-term approval does not mean unconditional support.

Local blogger Scott Roeben of Vital Vegas was sharply critical, writing: "Never in our town's history has the will of the many (including Strip workers, small businesses) been so flagrantly and destructively ignored to satisfy the interests of the few (four casinos). The LVCVA is contributing $10 million a year in taxpayer dollars to this s***show." The county will continue negotiating annual construction schedules and traffic mitigation plans.
