Eight Arrested As Doncaster Authorities Raid Illegal Gambling Dens

Eight people were arrested in Doncaster after two suspected illegal gambling dens were raided in the city centre.

The action was part of Operation Snaresbrook. This is a coordinated effort involving the Gambling Commission, Immigration Enforcement, South Yorkshire Police and City of Doncaster Council’s trading standards and licensing teams.

Officers searched two unlicensed venues. There, they discovered poker tables, slot machines and account books. Almost £9,000 in cash was also seized during the operation.

One person was arrested on suspicion of offences under the Gambling Act 2005. The remaining seven arrests were related to alleged immigration offences.

Illegal Gambling Linked to Wider Criminality

Authorities warned that unlicensed gambling venues can be connected to other forms of serious criminal activity. This includes organised crime, money laundering and human trafficking.

Illegal venues operate outside the safeguards imposed by the Gambling Commission. This means customers don’t benefit from protections relating to fair play, age verification, safer gambling or the handling of their money.

Councillor Gemma Cobby, City of Doncaster Council’s cabinet member for regulation and enforcement, planning and safer communities, said illegal gambling could also undermine confidence in legitimate local businesses.

“Illegal gambling has no place in our city.”

Cobby said illicit gambling dens were often associated with organised criminal groups and could be used to launder money.

She encouraged members of the public to report concerns about businesses operating in Doncaster, adding that the council investigates every report it receives.

Police To Continue Gathering Intelligence

Doncaster Central Neighbourhood Policing Team Inspector Lisa Bird said all businesses must comply with the laws governing gambling in the UK.

She warned that the criminal activities associated with illegal gambling threatened the safety and security of Doncaster city centre.

Immigration Enforcement Assistant Director for Yorkshire Tim Gallacher described the raids as a successful operation and highlighted the cooperation between the different enforcement bodies involved.

Sue Young, executive director of operations at the Gambling Commission, said the regulator was continually seeking opportunities to work with police forces and other agencies to tackle illegal gambling.

Operation Supports Doncaster’s Safer City Initiative

The raids also support Doncaster’s wider Safer City initiative. The council and South Yorkshire Police are working together to address crime and antisocial behaviour through this programme.

The programme is intended to increase visible enforcement activity in the city centre while investing in resources designed to make residents and visitors feel safer.
