Inverness and BetGoodwin Highlight Football Sponsorship Divide

Key Takeaways

  • Inverness Caledonian Thistle signed a shirt sponsorship deal with BetGoodwin until 2028
  • Premier League clubs will remove front-of-shirt gambling sponsors from August
  • Lower-league clubs continue to rely heavily on betting partnerships for revenue

Inverness Caledonian Thistle has got itself a new front-of-shirt sponsorship agreement with online sportsbook BetGoodwin, less than two years after entering administration.

The Scottish club was recently crowned League One champions and will carry the bookmaker’s branding until May 2028. The club is currently preparing for a return to the Scottish Championship.

This is significant timing. This is because Premier League clubs will no longer feature gambling companies as front-of-shirt sponsors next year. This is after a voluntary agreement between clubs was made. Inverness’ new deal, however, shows how different the financial reality is outside England’s top flight.

Financial pressures remain severe outside the Premier League

In many lower-down clubs in the football leagues, gambling sponsorships are one of the few reliable sources of major income.

League One clubs in England averaged pre-tax losses of £5.2 million during the 2023/24 season, according to Deloitte’s latest Annual Review of Football Finance. Championship clubs collectively reported operating losses of £411 million. Net debt totalled £1.5 billion.

In Scotland, financial strain has also got worse recently. The Begbies Traynor Football Distress Survey showed that several lower-league Scottish clubs were under serious financial pressure at the end of 2025.

Inverness itself entered administration in October 2024. This happened after investment talks collapsed. The club reported losses of £1.7 million for the 2023/24 financial year. It survived largely due to financial support from former chairman Alan Savage.

Against all this, securing a long-term commercial partnership with BetGoodwin is a major boost for the club.

Gambling sponsorship restrictions are limited

Although Premier League clubs have agreed to remove gambling sponsors from the front of match shirts, the restrictions currently apply only to England’s top division.

The English Football League continues to allow gambling sponsorships. We’ve got Sky Bet’s title sponsorship of the Championship, League One and League Two running until 2029. Several Championship clubs are still carry betting brands on their shirts.

The Scottish Premiership has also resisted calls for a similar ban. Clubs including Celtic, Rangers and Dundee United remain partnered with gambling operators.  SPFL chief executive Neil Doncaster has previously stated there are no plans for league-wide restrictions.

Research from Ampere Analysis found Scottish Premiership audiences are highly engaged with betting. This means that sponsorships in Scotland are particularly valuable to operators.

For smaller clubs that have limited global reach, alternative sponsorship opportunities can be difficult to secure.

Debate over gambling sponsorship continues

Campaign groups, including The Big Step, have continued pushing for stricter restrictions on gambling advertising in football. They argue that sponsorships normalise betting and increase exposure among younger fans.

The UK Government has also been consulting on proposals linked to unlicensed gambling sponsorships in British sport. The Betting and Gaming Council has also warned that offshore operators could account for more than half of UK sports sponsorship deals by 2027.

The debate leaves lower-league football in a difficult position. While top-flight clubs may be able to replace gambling income through global commercial partnerships, many clubs outside the Premier League still rely on betting sponsorships to remain financially competitive.

Inverness’ new BetGoodwin agreement shows that reality. For clubs operating on narrow margins, gambling partnerships are one of the few sponsorship categories willing to invest at meaningful levels.
