USA Beats $1 Billion in iGaming Revenue in May, 5th time in 6 Months

 U.S. online casino revenue exceeded $1 billion in May, marking the fifth time in the last six months that the national market reached the milestone. 

The exact figure, roughly $1.03 billion, was up 14.7 percent year-over-year and 2.4 percent on the April total. It also reflected the continued national growth in gambling, with sports betting already a booming industry in 39 states with legal markets.

Only seven states have legal and live iGaming markets in comparison. While the market has been slower to take hold, it represents enormous revenue opportunities for states that pass legislation supporting the activity.

National online casino revenue leaders

iGaming includes common internet casino amenities, such as slot machines, table games, blackjack, and other options.

Pennsylvania’s online casino industry paced the national market in May with $321.1 million in gross gaming revenue. That follows a familiar trend, as the American Gaming Association in May shared that the Quaker State generated a nation-leading $3.5 billion in revenue in 2025, up nearly 28 percent YoY.

Michigan online casinos were the second-most lucrative jurisdiction, producing $305.8 million in May revenue. No other state industry eclipsed $300 million.

New Jersey, which has one of the nation’s most robust gaming markets, claimed the bronze medal with $276.3 million in monthly revenue.

The three states mentioned above produced nearly 88 percent of the nation’s iGaming revenue total. Michigan showed the largest growth, improving its total by 21.6 percent YoY. Its $1.5 billion total through the first five months of 2026 was also up 22.1 percent from where it was one year ago. 

The national market has now eclipsed $5 billion in yearly revenue, putting it on pace to surpass $12 billion before the end of the year. That would easily mark a new record.

Looking at smaller states

While the three largest operators supplied most of the national handle, they did not prevent other states from showing local growth.

Six of the seven legal iGaming states beat their previous year’s monthly total by at least 10%. Connecticut was the only exception to that trend, and it still outdid its May 2025 handle by 4.3% with $63.9 million in revenue.

West Virginia, which finished fifth of the seven states, produced $39.5 million in revenue (up 32.1% YoY). Delaware generated $15.1 million (up 44.9%), and Rhode Island hit $6.6 million (up 36.3%).

Maine will soon join the national online casino industry. Gov. Janet Mills (D) did not act on LD 1164, allowing it to settle into law 90 days after the state house session ended on April 17. Online casinos are expected to be operational statewide later this year.

A number of other states have considered and made pushes for online casino legalization. The ongoing fad of prediction markets has stolen the focus of both gambling critics and proponents, although the latest revenue figures represent the economic opportunities produced by iGaming.
