Entain appoints Sheila Bangalore as independent director

Key Takeaways

  • Sheila Bangalore joins Entain with more than 20 years of gaming industry experience
  • The appointment comes amid ongoing regulatory scrutiny
  • Entain has also called for tighter controls on unlicensed gambling sponsorships in football

Entain has appointed Sheila Bangalore as an independent non-executive director. The London-listed gambling group announced the appointment on 28 May. This addition brings an executive with extensive experience across the gaming, hospitality and technology sectors. The move comes as Entain continues to navigate regulatory challenges in several key markets. It’s also a way the organisation is showing to be pursuing its long-term growth strategy under CEO Stella David.

Industry veteran joins the board

Bangalore brings more than two decades of experience to the role. Her executive career includes senior positions at major gaming companies Bally Technologies and Aristocrat.

She currently serves on the board of Alliance Entertainment Holding Corporation and previously held a board role with Games Global.

Entain said Bangalore's expertise in regulation, governance and capital markets would be a valuable addition to the board.

Board chair Pierre Bouchut welcomed the appointment, describing her as a highly experienced executive with a strong track record in the gaming sector.

Latest leadership change at Entain

The appointment follows a period of significant leadership change at the company.

Former CEO Gavin Isaacs left Entain earlier this year after a short tenure in the role. Stella David subsequently returned as chief executive before later being confirmed in the position permanently. Bangalore is the latest senior appointment for the group. The operator has been trying to strengthen governance and oversight across its international operations.

Australian regulatory issues continue

The update comes shortly after Entain's Australian business entered into an 18-month court-enforceable undertaking with the Australian Communications and Media Authority. This followed an investigation into more than 500 breaches linked to Australia's BetStop self-exclusion programme.

According to the regulator, Entain opened accounts for some self-excluded customers. It also failed to promptly close certain accounts and sent promotional communications without mandatory BetStop messaging.

In response, the operator introduced several compliance improvements. These included a "single customer view" system designed to consolidate customer information across multiple brands.

Calls for tougher football sponsorship rules

Entain has also recently become involved in wider gambling regulation debates in the UK.

In May, the company urged the Independent Football Regulator to stop English football clubs from entering sponsorship agreements with gambling operators that are not licensed in the UK.

The operator argued that partnerships involving offshore betting firms could expose consumers to businesses operating outside UK regulatory protections.

Meanwhile, the company has also reduced its retail footprint in Ireland. They have recently closed more than a third of their Ladbrokes betting shops in the country.
