South Africa's National Gambling Board Launches Verified Casino Portal

South African players have long faced a confusing online gambling landscape, where distinguishing between licensed operators and offshore gambling sites is not always straightforward. Against that backdrop, the National Gambling Board's new  Verified Gambling Operators portal is a meaningful step. Launched in April 2026, the public database lists every gambling operator that holds a valid licence in South Africa, covering both land-based and online operations. Players can search the portal to confirm whether a site or betting service is operating legally before they deposit.

What the Portal Covers

The portal was developed in collaboration with South Africa's Provincial Licensing Authorities and is hosted on the NGB's official website. It is designed to be continuously updated as new licences are issued, suspended or revoked.

 The Scale of the Problem

The portal launch comes at a time when South Africa's gambling regulator is under growing pressure to address the explosion in illegal and offshore gambling. According to National Gambling Board data, total turnover across South Africa's gambling sector reached R1.5 trillion in the 2024/25 financial year, a 31.3% increase on the previous year. Illegal gambling activities are estimated to account for around 62% of that total volume, driven largely by offshore operators that pay no South African tax.

The NGB has also recently clarified that Remote Gambling Servers, the technology underpinning online casino games, are currently unlawful under South African national law. This has triggered enforcement action against bookmakers that were offering casino-style games such as online roulette under sports betting licences, with regulators and courts moving to restrict these products to operators holding full casino licences.

What It Means for Players Right Now

For South African players, the practical message from the portal launch is straightforward: check before you deposit. The NGB's verified list gives players a fast, reliable way to confirm whether a gambling site holds a valid South African licence. Sites that do not appear on the register may be operating outside the law and outside any consumer protection framework.

Players who use unlicensed sites have limited recourse if something goes wrong. There is no local regulator to escalate complaints to and no guarantee that bonus terms, withdrawal conditions or dispute resolution processes meet any recognised standard.
