SkyCity Introduces Mandatory Player Cards at New Zealand Casinos

Anyone planning a visit to a SkyCity casino in New Zealand should be prepared for a new step before they place their first bet. SkyCity has now fully introduced mandatory carded play across its New Zealand casino properties, meaning every customer must register for a SHOW by SkyCity card before they can gamble.

The new system represents one of the biggest changes to New Zealand's land-based casino industry in recent years. Rather than simply acting as a loyalty card, the SHOW card is now an important responsible gambling tool that allows SkyCity to better monitor gambling activity, identify potential harm earlier and provide additional support when needed.

What Is Carded Play?

Under the new system, every player must have a verified SHOW by SkyCity card (or an eligible Premier Rewards card) before using gaming machines or playing table games.

Signing up is free and requires customers to provide valid photo identification. Once registered, players can still use cash or other accepted payment methods, but they must use their player card whenever they gamble.

Why Has SkyCity Introduced It?

SkyCity says the move is aimed at strengthening responsible gambling rather than changing how customers gamble.

Because every gaming session is linked to a verified player, the casino can better understand gambling behaviour and identify patterns that may indicate someone is at risk of experiencing gambling harm.

The system also enables customers to view their own gambling history, helping them keep track of how long they have played and how frequently they visit.

The Department of Internal Affairs developed minimum technical standards for mandatory account-based play, while SkyCity has updated its Host Responsibility Programme to support the new technology.
