Kalshi to Offer NFL Contracts on Whether Players Will Play in Games

Ahead of Week 1 of the 2026-27 NFL season, Kalshi, an online prediction market platform, will offer contracts on whether certain players will play in future games. These contracts do not ask players to predict anything involving an injury, though. 

However, this loophole may draw ire, as leagues and regulators have pushed back against traditional sports betting on injury-related outcomes. 

In this market, traders can effectively trade on whether a player will take part in a game. Of course, many things could influence this, such as a late addition to the injury report or a coach deciding to bench a player. 

Right now at Kalshi, when a player exits due to injury, the contract is settled using the statistics; if a player doesn't play, the rules for a player not participating take effect. 

The Insider Information Risk

Information related to injuries is one of the more sensitive topics, as it is known to the public only through insiders or team personnel. It's because of that lack of an even playing field that leagues have made their injury report policies more formal.

When this news breaks, it affects many aspects of traditional sports betting, including moneylines, spreads, totals, props, and more. With this market on Kalshi, it could be susceptible to people with prior knowledge taking advantage.

The CFTC's June Warning on Injury Contracts

In June, the Commodity Futures Trading Commission pointed out that contracts related to injuries were prohibited. However, the language may not support a "will a player play or not" type of contract, and Kalshi appears willing to try. 

Of course, a player could miss a game for a variety of reasons outside of injury, such as suspension, a coach's decision, their wife giving birth hours before a game, and more. 

This new contract comes at a time when Kalshi is embroiled in several legal battles, such as those in Nevada and New York. Nevada is using other states' tax laws against Kalshi, and the CFTC has ordered Kalshi to continue operating in New York despite a state lawsuit against it. 

As for Kalshi, the company expanded its market integrity tools this year, including systems with employment verification for certain high-risk markets.
