Key Takeaways

  • - Michigan has issued nearly 80 cease-and-desist notices to offshore gambling operators since April.- Michigan has issued nearly 80 cease-and-desist notices to offshore gambling operators since April

This past Thursday, the Michigan Gaming Control Board issued cease-and-desist notices to 33 offshore gambling operators, stating they were illegally offering casino gameplay, sweepstakes play, and sports betting to its residents.

This follows a Michigan judge blocking Kalshi from offering sports event contracts in the state.

Offshore Platforms Don't Offer the Same Protections as Licensed Outlets

Along with the letter, the Michigan Gaming Control Board said these offshore platforms don't offer the same player protections as licensed operators.

Michigan is one of a few states that offer both legal casino play and sports betting, both in-person and online. On a legal Michigan online platform, players can use resources like self-exclusion.

“Offshore sites don’t respect it,” said MGCB Executive Director Henry Williams. “They will take a deposit from someone who has asked for help, and the MGCB has no way to help that person get it back.”

Other benefits of playing at licensed outlets include tools such as deposit, spending, loss, and session limits. According to the American Gaming Association, the illegal gambling market has grown 22% since 2022.

“These 33 letters put operators on notice that our residents are not an untapped market, and that anyone who thinks they can ignore our protections will hear from us,” Williams added.

The MGCB maintains a list of licensed operators, which matters because some players may not realize the site they're playing at is considered offshore.

Michigan Has Issued Nearly 80 Cease-and-Desist Notices Since April

These 33 notices follow the MGCB's 45 sent in April. So, since April, they've issued nearly 80 cease-and-desist notices.
