Key Takeaways

  • Primm Valley opened in 1990 and was one of three properties near the border
  • The first closure came in Dec. 2024 when Buffalo Bill’s shut down
  • California tribal casinos, competition in Las Vegas, and a decline in tourism contributed to the casino’s hardships

The renowned Primm Valley Casino Resorts will shut its doors on July 4, Las Vegas TV station KLAS reported.

Primm Valley is the last of three major casinos that rest near the California-Nevada border. The decision to shut the property down was revealed after employees received letters asking them to vacate their housing by July 6, according to documents obtained by KLAS.

The popular casino attraction has operated since 1990.

Primm Valley entering final months

Employees were informed on May 5 that both their positions at the casino and their housing at the Desert Oasis Apartments would run out after the celebration of America’s Independence Day.

“We recognize this is an extraordinarily difficult time and we are deeply grateful for the dedication each of you has brought to the Primm Valley Casino Resorts property,” The Primadonna Company wrote to its employees, per KLAS. “However, due to the upcoming end of all operations at Primm Valley Casino Resorts, including this apartment complex, this letter shall serve as formal notice of termination of your apartment lease agreement.”

The letter was sent two months in advance of the closing date – double the required 30-day minimum – to give employees adequate time to find new housing.

Primm Valley was one of three casino-resorts that operated near the border. Buffalo Bill’s Resort & Casino, which closed in Dec. 2024, and Whiskey Pete’s Hotel & Casino, which stopped everyday operations in July 2025 and is only open for events, both also owned by The Primadonny Company, were the others.

Primm Center in Las Vegas and the Flying J truck stop, both of which were also controlled by Primm, were also confirmed by 8 News Now to be shutting down.

Gone for good

Primm Valley was the middle child of the Primm casinos near the border.

Whiskey Pete’s was the first Primm property to open in 1977. Primm Valley, originally known as Primadonna Casino Resorts, came 13 years later, followed by Buffalo Bill’s in 1994. The last in this list was commonly associated with a whipping roller coaster that distinguished and separated the resort from its competitors.

The Primm resorts were at their highest during the 1990s before they entered a steady decline. The legalization of tribal casinos in California in 2000 added more competition and meant that California guests and residents didn’t need to traverse state lines to get their gambling fix.

Additionally, Nevada’s multitude of gaming attractions – including those with poker, live-dealer table games, and slot machines – ratcheted up the competition for the properties.

Modern times have also added a strain to Nevada’s hospitality and tourism industry. A declining number of visitors has made hotels and casinos uncharacteristically difficult to fill.

Multiple casino and hotel executives have poured cold water on the idea that Las Vegas is in trouble moving forward. However, recent reports have shown that foot traffic and hotel occupancy are dropping quickly.
