Macau Tourism Hits Record Highs as Casino Revenue Dips

Macau's tourism sector kept breaking records in 2026, even as casino revenue forecasts weakened. The pedestrian-only Qingmao Checkpoint now processes daily arrivals more than 7% higher than in July 2025. It is running above 50% capacity. Macau's Public Security Police confirmed the city surpassed 20 million visitor arrivals by June 20, 2026. That milestone arrived 18 days earlier than the previous year. The growth follows a record 2025, when Macau logged its highest annual visitor total. Analysts, however, warn that gaming revenue may continue to soften through the second half of 2026.

Qingmao Checkpoint Hits Record as Arrivals Top 20 Million

The Qingmao Checkpoint connects Macau with mainland China through a pedestrian-only crossing. It opened in 2021 and operates 24 hours a day. The facility uses facial recognition software and can process around 200,000 arrivals daily. Last year, it took over two weeks longer to reach the same milestone, according to Macau Shimbun. The pace reflects broader momentum across Macau's border network. Macau's Public Security Police said the city crossed 20 million visitor arrivals by June 20, 2026. Average daily arrivals so far this year reached 116,000, up 10.2% from the same period last year.

Mainland China Leads Visitors as Macau Sets 2026 Goals

Macau's growth builds on a record-breaking 2025. Mainland China remained the largest source market in 2026, contributing 14.6 million visitors by June 20. Hong Kong followed with 3.46 million arrivals, and Taiwan added 541,000. International visitors totaled 1.26 million, led by South Korea with 270,000 and the Philippines with 260,000. The highest single-day visitor count this year reached 248,000 on May 2. This figure was reported during China's Labor Day holiday period. Macau authorities expect visitor arrivals to grow between 5% and 8% in 2026. Officials are targeting 3 million international visitors for the full year. The Macao Government Tourism Office also considered free direct transfers for international tourists from Guangzhou in April.

Casino Revenue Softens Despite Visitor Growth

Rising visitor numbers have not translated into proportional gains in gaming revenue. The International Monetary Fund forecasts Macau's economy will grow 3% in 2026. Financial research firm CreditSights said spending per capita fell 5% year-on-year in April. Per-visitor spending dropped to MOP$5,781, even as arrivals rose 11.3% that month. Financial analysts expect Macau casinos to keep struggling through the second half of 2026.

Many integrated resorts are shifting focus toward non-gaming attractions instead. Galaxy Macau opened a new children's splash park this month.
