Alberta Opens Regulated Market for Online Betting, Casino

Alberta's regulated iGaming market officially launched Monday, making it the second Canadian province to allow private online sports betting and casino operators. Nearly 50 companies registered with the Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Commission ahead of the launch. Service Alberta Minister Dale Nally said he expects roughly 20 operators to be ready for customers. The framework is designed to protect bettors and pull activity away from unregulated offshore sites, officials say. Major brands, including FanDuel, DraftKings, BetMGM, Caesars, and bet365, joined the market on day one.

Alberta's Gambling Tax Revenue and Black-Market Fight

Before Monday's launch, Albertans gambling online had only two options: government-run PlayAlberta or offshore sites with no oversight. The government estimates roughly 70% of online gambling activity happens through unregulated channels. Nally said the province can't shut down the internet entirely.

A healthy, regulated market, he said, is the best way to fight the black market.

Alberta will collect 20% of each operator's revenue. Nally projected a $76-million boost to provincial coffers in the first year. Still, he insisted money wasn't the driving force behind the initiative. "It never has been," he said. "This has been about putting player safety and responsibility first." Estonia-based Coolbet, meanwhile, announced it is leaving Alberta because of the new rules.

Caesars, bet365, DraftKings Launch Alberta Platforms

Caesars Entertainment debuted three platforms simultaneously: Caesars Sportsbook & Casino, Caesars Palace Online Casino, and Horseshoe Online Casino. Eric Hession, president of Caesars Digital, called it a defining moment for the company's digital business. bet365 activated its sportsbook and casino products right away and unveiled a partnership with the Canadian Football League.

DraftKings entered with its flagship sportsbook, casino platform, and Golden Nugget brand. Supplier Pragmatic Play received certification for its slots and live casino portfolio, including titles like Fury of Anubis and Big Bass Blast. Sharon McHugh, the company's Director of PR, called Alberta an exciting new adventure for regulated iGaming in Canada.

Alberta's Responsible Gambling Rules and Limits

Alberta's framework requires operators to offer deposit, wagering, and time limits from day one. A centralized self-exclusion program lets players ban themselves, with unsettled wagers refunded upon enrollment. One percent of gross revenue will fund problem gambling programs and treatment. Two percent is earmarked for First Nations initiatives, though the distribution details remain undetermined. Operators must also secure RG Check accreditation and comply with advertising rules that bar ads targeting minors. University of Toronto research found Ontario's gambling helpline calls from men under 24 rose over 300% since its 2022 launch. Nally acknowledged Alberta could see the same trend repeated.
