Key Takeaways

  • New Lotto format offers two chances to win per £2 line
  • UK-specific Powerball to launch with £12m starting jackpots
  • Operator targets doubling weekly contributions to good causes

Allwyn has confirmed changes to the UK’s National Lottery offering. There will be a redesigned Lotto format and there are also plans for a UK-specific version of Powerball. The updates are set to roll out this summer. The aim is to improve player engagement, increase prize-winning opportunities and drive higher returns for good causes.

Lotto Moves to Two-Round Format

From 7 June, Lotto will adopt a new two-round draw structure. Players will have two chances to win from a single £2 line. The change improves the overall odds of winning any prize from 1-in-9.3 to 1-in-4.9.

Each draw will feature two sets of six main numbers and a  bonus ball, drawn using separate machines. Players can win in either round or both, while jackpots will continue to start at £2m and roll over up to five times before a must-be-won event.

Allwyn said the update is designed to strengthen Lotto’s appeal while maintaining its position as a leading route to seven-figure wins. The Lotto HotPicks add-on will also transition to the same two-round format.

UK Powerball Launch Marks Major Expansion

Alongside the Lotto overhaul,  Allwyn has confirmed plans to introduce a UK-specific version of Powerball in partnership with the Multi-State Lottery Association.

The launch marks the first time the game will be made available outside the United States. UK players will be able to take part in the shared jackpot, with prizes aligned to the wider Powerball structure.

Tickets will cost £4 per line, with jackpots starting at £12m. Winnings for UK jackpot winners will be paid out over 30 years.

The UK version will also include an additional prize tier, awarding £8 for matching two main numbers. Matching five main numbers will get a fixed £1m prize. Other payouts will vary depending on draw results.

Draws will take place three times a week, with tickets available both online and in retail outlets.

Growth and Good Causes

Allwyn said the introduction of the new formats is expected to increase returns to National Lottery-funded projects, with more than 30% of ticket revenue directed to good causes.

The operator aims to double weekly contributions from around £30m to £60m by 2034. Current contributions stand at approximately £33m per week.

Chief executive Andria Vidler said the changes form part of a broader strategy to modernise the National Lottery offering and expand its appeal.

“We are delivering on our promise to bring more games, more entertainment and more innovation to The National Lottery. With extensive upgrades to our digital and retail channels now complete, we have a fantastic summer lined up.” – Andria Vidler, Allwyn Chief Executive

She added that the updated Lotto would create “hundreds more millionaires every year”, while the UK launch of Powerball is expected to capture significant public interest through its large, long-term jackpots.
