Key Takeaways

  • The casino did not state if the woman was allowed to keep her winnings
  • Pennsylvania’s gaming regulator says that excluded gamblers cannot collect winnings or recover losses while they are excluded
  • Lifetime self-exclusions cannot be overturned

A 69-year-old New Jersey woman won a jackpot at a Pennsylvania casino on Sunday— and was immediately kicked out.

The woman, whose name has not been released, added herself to Pennsylvania’s lifetime casino self-exclusion list in 2019. Her Sunday win only notified casino officials of her presence and gave them grounds to kick her out of the facility.

The incident occurred at the Hollywood Casino at Penn National Race Course in Grantville, WHTM reported.

Excluded gambler removed from casino

The woman is a resident of Asbury in Hunterdon County, which is roughly two hours from the casino. It is unknown how much money she won and what machine she was playing when she struck gold with the jackpot.

State police revealed that the Hollywood Casino put in a call to the authorities after they determined the woman’s identity and her banned-for-life status.

Adding oneself to a self-exclusion list is completely voluntary. Limited-time exclusions can be overturned, but lifetime exclusions cannot.

Casino officials have not revealed if the prohibited patron was allowed to collect her jackpot winnings. However, the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board (PGCB) says that individuals on the self-excluded list are prohibited from receiving gambling winnings, which likely puts an end to that mystery.

“Individuals who enroll in self-exclusion are prohibited from collecting any winnings, recovering any losses or accepting complimentary gifts or services or any other thing of value from a licensee or operator,” the PGCB’s rules state.

PGCB spokesperson Doug Harbach previously said that winnings forfeited by self-excluded gamblers are awarded to the agency and a fund that is used to combat problem gambling.

Woman cited for trespassing

The  self-exclusion list is a way for people, especially those afflicted with a gambling addiction, to implement preventative measures for themselves. Exclusions can last for one year, five years, or permanently.

Self-excluded gamblers preemptively forfeit their rights to gamble for a defined period

Sunday’s jackpot winner added herself to the self-exclusion list roughly seven years ago in 2019. Her decision to return to a casino will result in the filing of a trespassing citation, which can result in jail time and/or a fine.
