Key Takeaways

  • Alberta's regulated iGaming market now has 50 approved sites from 29 operators, up from 22 sites when it opened on July 13.
  • Super Group moved all five of its Alberta brands into the regulated market, including Betway, Spin Casino and Jackpot City.
  • 888 launched Alberta's first regulated online poker site on Oct. 13, while PokerStars cut off Alberta players with no announced return.

Alberta's regulated iGaming market has more than doubled since launch. The Alberta iGaming Corporation (AiGC) now has 50 approved sites from 29 operators, up from 22 on opening day. Some are sister products from a single operator, such as bet365's separate casino and sportsbook sites.

The jump follows the province's Oct. 13 deadline for gray-market operators. Companies serving Albertans without a provincial license had to get licensed or exit. Super Group and Apollo Entertainment, two major gray-market players, now have their brands listed.

Stake, another big offshore brand, has also joined the directory. The growth is an early win for Canada's second regulated iGaming market after Ontario. Alberta opened the market on July 13, 2026, to give players a legal alternative to unlicensed sites.

Super Group Moves All Five Brands Into the Regulated Market

Super Group was among Canada's biggest gray-market operators. All five of its Alberta brands now appear on the AiGC directory. They are Betway, Spin Casino, Jackpot City, Royal Vegas and Ruby Fortune.

Royal Vegas and Ruby Fortune made the switch first. Betway followed on Sept. 28, and Jackpot City and Spin Casino joined before the deadline. Super Group used the full transition window instead of launching on day one.

CEO Neal Menashe outlined the plan on the company's Aug. 5 earnings call. "All brands have to follow the local regulation by the middle of October," Menashe said. The company has said it aims for a "higher teens" share of the Alberta market. It now competes directly with FanDuel, DraftKings, BetMGM and bet365.

Apollo and Stake Go Legal, While 888 and PokerStars Split on Poker

Malta-based Apollo Entertainment has registered seven brands in Alberta. None was live when the market opened in July. Golden Tiger Casino went first, launching alongside Betway on Sept. 28. Captain Cooks, Grand Mondial, Yukon Gold and Zodiac casinos are among the others now listed.

Stake is one of the newest major names on the directory. Its Canadian arm, Stake Canada, received a full Alberta license from AGLC on Oct. 6. The company had targeted an Oct. 12 launch, pending an operating agreement with AiGC. AiGC welcomed Stake to the market on Oct. 13, deadline day. Poker players faced the sharpest changes. Both PokerStars and 888 cut off Alberta access to their international poker sites on deadline day. 888 launched a separate, Alberta-only site the same day, becoming the province's first regulated online poker operator. PokerStars has not said whether or when it will return.

Grace Period Ends With a 70% Target for Legal Play

Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis (AGLC) regulates the market. AiGC manages the commercial agreements operators need to go live.

Gray-market operators had to stop unregulated activity by Oct. 13 to stay eligible. Service Alberta Minister Dale Nally ruled out any further extension. "We have been very clear that the deadline is October 13th," Nally said. AGLC is now responsible for monitoring compliance and taking action against sites that continue operating without approval.

Before launch, an estimated 70% of online gambling in Alberta happened on unregulated sites. AiGC's goal is to reverse that ratio by July 2027.

The next test is whether players follow the brands they already know.
