Meet Bren

Bren Gray

Bren Gray is a New Zealand-based content writer and iGaming specialist. He’s fascinated by the mathematics and mechanics of online casino games, building on his background in sports betting. Writing for Casino.com NZ, he aims to turn casual players into informed punters by explaining game mechanics, RTPs, and optimal strategies for games like blackjack and roulette.

As a Kiwi born and bred, Bren understands the New Zealand market’s unique position at the moment. He rigorously tests offshore casino sites for transparency, fast withdrawals, and quality support before recommending them. His expertise is practical; he enjoys a cheeky hand of blackjack himself, but is an avid believer in responsible gambling and not letting things get out of control.

“The house edge is a fact of life, but how much fun you have in spite of it is up to you. My job is to make sure you know exactly what you're up against, so you can play smarter, safer, and enjoy the ride.”

Bren’s Writing Philosophy

Hailing from down under in New Zealand, Bren has been writing professionally for the better part of two decades. In an era increasingly cluttered with AI slop, he is passionate about crafting iGaming content that isn’t just filler, but a genuine tool for players.

Having spent the last 13 years dissecting odds and mechanics—first in sports and now in casinos—he knows that accurate information makes a real difference to a player’s experience (and their bankroll). Bren believes that writers have the power to bring clarity to the chaos of the casino floor, whether that’s online or in person. It’s a responsibility he does not take lightly.

“Gambling is more and more an online game, but for me I’ll never forget my first big win in a physical casino. It was somewhere in London, sometime in the early 2010s. I bet it all on #35 in roulette, the ball decided it was my lucky day, and the rest of my time in London was on the house.”

Q&A with Bren

That’s a tough one. It has to be a toss up between classic roulette or blackjack. I love the ease and immediate thrill of roulette, while the challenge of playing well and genuinely reducing the house’s edge in blackjack is always great.

Ignore the hot and cold labels. In a game of chance, past performance has zero influence on future results. Just because a roulette wheel hit red 10 times in a row doesn't mean black is due. Math doesn’t care about patterns.

It was my own actually! While testing a high-volatility slot for a review, I hit a 5,000x multiplier on a minimum bet. It wasn’t a progressive jackpot, which explains why I’m still working for a living, but it was still a pretty handy chunk of cash.

Online for value, land-based for vibes. Online casinos will always have a better RTP, but you can’t quite replicate the energy and unknowns of a busy casino floor on a Saturday night.

Any time you gamble, decide how much you’re going to spend in advance and simply treat that as the cost of your entertainment - a cover charge, per se. Sometimes, you’ll get a surprise and end up leaving with some, but if not, it was always expected and there are no nasty feelings.
