Key Takeaways
- The casino opened a temporary location in January
- Developers expect to finish the project before the end of 2027
- The finished facility will have about 450,000 square feet of gaming space
A casino just south of Virginia’s Richmond capital reached a construction milestone on Thursday.
A special "topping out” ceremony occurred at 1:00 a.m. ET at the Live! Casino Virginia project site at 301 Wagner Road in Petersburg. The event commemorated the placing of the final structural beam, which happened this morning.
Petersburg opened a temporary gaming site in January to accommodate gamers in anticipation of the full complex’s completion.
Petersburg casino hits construction milestone
The Petersburg casino is on track to open by its anticipated time near the end of 2027.
The finished version of the project will represent the Commonwealth’s fifth completed retail gaming facility. Customers will experience approximately 445,000 square feet of gaming space, which will be filled with more than 60 live-dealer table games, 1,600 slot machines, a 22-table poker room, and other casino amenities.
Developers will also erect a 200-room hotel with 25 suites, a pool, and fitness center. That’s in addition to more than 70,000 square feet of meeting, convention and entertainment space at the resort.
Guests will also have close to 20 food, bar and entertainment venues available to them, according to officials at the Live! Casino. Sports bettors will find a full in-person sportsbook, with odds available throughout the casino and its high-limit gaming areas.
Project leaders have consistently touted the strong economic impact of the casino. New temporary construction jobs were already created, and full-time staff is required by the facility for gaming, hospitality, dining, entertainment, and events.
Live! delivers for the economy
The topping out ceremony included interviews and comments from Reed Cordish, principal and partner of The Cordish Companies, which is behind the project, Cordish Gaming President Rob Norton, Bruce Smith Enterprise founder Bruce Smith, and Petersburg Mayor Samuel Parham.
While customers wait for the permanent location to open, the temporary site remains fully available to guests. It provides 75,000 square feet of space with over 900 slots, 30 table games, a bar, and fast-service dining options. The location is also on Wagner Road.
Despite the only available location being temporary, Petersburg showed its enthusiasm for a casino with its early support for the property. Live!’s initial 10-day period saw it generate close to $4.7 million in adjusted gross revenue, according to figures released by the state.
Slot machines provided a strong $3.9 million of the revenue. The 10-day pace put the facility on track for over $14 million in revenue in a monthly period.
That rate held true through the latest monthly report, which was released for August. Live! produced $14.3 million in AGR, with $10.7 million of that coming from slot machines, and $3.5 million from table games.
