  • Sycuan claims to have paid $68 million in jackpot winnings

The casino industry isn’t used to losing, but every once in a while, a gambler takes the house to the cleaners.

That’s exactly what happened at Sycuan Casino Resort in El Cajon, California, where a woman won a jackpot worth nearly $1.3 million. Improbably, she did so by risking just $8, meaning she won nearly $160,000 for every $1 she wagered.

The win, which occurred on May 30, was confirmed by the casino.

A life-changing casino jackpot

A patron known as Michelle K. was the big winner of the weekend, taking Sycuan Casino for a $1.3 million ride.

“I still can’t believe I won, but I deserve this,” the woman said about her win.

Michelle won the jackpot while playing a Dancing Drums Dragon game developed by Light & Wonder. After confirming her jackpot, Sycuan extended a complimentary resort stay and a massage at Spa Ritual to round out her experience.

“It’s truly special to see our guests experience moments like this where a single spin can change someone’s life in an instant,” said Rob Cinelli, general manager of the casino resort. “We extend our sincere congratulations to our guest on her life-changing jackpot win.”

Sycuan revealed that Michelle’s lucky fortune represented the largest slot win of the year.

The Dancing Drums Dragon game is just one amenity offered by the casino. The property is outfitted with 2,400 slot machines, 50 live-dealer table games, and poker and bingo rooms, along with a 300-room hotel, a pool, an 18-hole golf course, a convention center, and a spa.

Millions in jackpot winnings

According to Sycuan Casino Resort, Michelle is the third seven-figure jackpot winner this year. The other two occurred in January and February.

The casino also claimed it had paid $68 million in jackpot winners year-to-date, per FOX 5 San Diego.

California grants exclusive gaming rights to government-recognized tribes. Approved operators can host slots, table games, card rooms, and more.

According to the California Gambling Control Commission’s website, there are 65 tribal casinos that are operated by 62 tribes across the state. The Sycuan Casino Resort is owned and operated by the Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation, which is based in El Cajon. The tribe also has part-ownership of Major League Soccer’s San Diego FC.

San Diego County was also the location of another million-dollar casino win for a player at Jamul Casino Resort in Jamul. Myrna D. took home $1.1 million from a $5 side bet and a STAX Super 4 jackpot, a Royal Flush of Diamonds and the largest jackpot that is available.

The Royal Flush can only happen when the dealer turns a 21, and the player has the missing cards that complete a Royal Flush.
