Key Takeaways
- MGC is investigating Ryan Gold over the 2026 NFL Draft
- It involves suspicious betting patterns around the Cardinals' top pick
- The NFL suspended Gold over these concerns last month
The integrity of the NFL is once again in question in the US.
The Massachusetts Gaming Commission has announced an investigation into unusual betting patterns involving Arizona Cardinals’ Director of College Scouting Ryan Gold. According to the regulator, it noticed a spike in bets on the team's 2026 NFL draft picks. It found several accounts linked to Gold, prompting the investigation.
Gold’s attorney, Mike Caspino, has vehemently denied the accusations, saying he is confident the claims are baseless.
Gold Suspended by NFL in July
The MGC isn’t the first regulator to target Gold.
The Arizona Department of Gambling has been working with the NFL to investigate the scout. It is looking into the same accusations around the 2026 NFL draft, as well as a series of parlays they believe Gold placed.
The investigation is ongoing, but the NFL did suspend Gold on July 17 in connection with it.
Gold claims the parlays involved his family members, who have a tradition of placing weekly $10 parlays. He rejects claims that he shared inside information with his family, and the ADG has yet to share its evidence.
Gold grew up and began coaching in Massachusetts, and still has family and friends in the state. The MGC’s investigation likely signals it believes some of the illegal wagers were placed within the state’s borders.
Love Draft Pick Sparked Concerns
It seems the Cardinals' selection of running back Jeremiyah Love in April’s draft sparked concerns.
Love opened with long odds to be drafted third overall, but it dropped significantly two days before the draft. DraftKings confirmed it saw more wagers and money on Love going third overall than those involving any other player in the draft.
Cardinals GM Monti Ossenfort confirmed the pick was made at the beginning of Draft week, before the odds shifted. That's when suspicious betting patterns began, prompting regulators and sportsbooks to flag a possible scandal.
Sports Betting Industry Scores a Win
The country’s sports betting market has been under fire as it deals with the emergence of sports prediction markets. One of the biggest arguments in its favor is integrity monitoring, which assures the public that it can catch betting schemes at a far higher rate than prediction platforms and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, the rival industry’s sole regulator.
While the scandal involving Gold shows integrity remains a concern, the NFL needed less than three months to deliver a suspension. That is faster than other major scandals, many of which have taken more than a year to identify and punish.
The investigations also show how vigilant the sports betting industry is for suspicious betting patterns. We have not seen the same from sports prediction markets as of yet, further fueling integrity fears around sports markets.
