The NCAA is about to enter one of its most dangerous eras.

A Texas court issued an injunction that will allow Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby to keep his eligibility until after his final season. The NCAA had originally stripped his eligibility after discovering he had placed almost $100,000 in wagers over his four-year college career. Some of those wagers involved his own team.

The ruling sets a February trial date for Sorsby, well after his final season of college football will be over. The NCAA has appealed the court’s ruling.

Ruling Sets Disastrous Precedent

When issuing the injunction, a Texas judge shared that he had seen enough evidence of financial harm from Sorsby. That’s largely due to NIL deals, which would disappear if the quarterback’s career were cut short. It would also affect his potential future in the NFL, which was enough for the court to rule in his favor.

Unfortunately, the ruling now sets a precedent for NCAA gambling scandals. It eliminated the NCAA’s ability to enforce its rules, potentially leading to similar rulings against past and future athletes involved in betting scandals.

Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark shared his fears with ESPN after the ruling was delivered.

The ramifications of today's ruling are significant and could have broad impacts across college athletics, creating great concern amongst our membership. I've been consulting with our key stakeholders and have scheduled meetings with our conference ADs and executive board this week.

Flowers for Charlie

The NCAA has unjustly taken a lot of heat over the court’s ruling, despite the league's attempts to protect the integrity of its sports. In truth, the league has been desperately asking for help to rein in sports betting for years.

NCAA President Charlie Baker has led those efforts, working with lawmakers, sportsbooks, and schools to help add protections for bettors. Those calls got louder when two Iowa schools had dozens of athletes accused of violating the league’s gambling rules in 2024. The league did make some progress, but the Sorsby ruling has now wiped it away.

With the current scandal being the biggest the league has seen, perhaps the industry and lawmakers will listen a bit more closely to Baker going forward.

Sorsby May Be the Biggest Victim

Say what you want about Sorsby, but he may be the biggest victim in this story.

The quarterback’s gambling habits strongly suggest he is dealing with a gambling addiction. To his credit, he did enter treatment programs after the scandal was uncovered. His team acknowledged he was struggling and blamed the rule violations on his addiction.

While everything above is likely true, anyone who has dealt with any form of addiction knows it takes more than a few weeks in a rehab center to get past it. That doesn’t mean he should be forced into longer rehab stints, but it does mean he should not be placed back into the same situation that fed his addiction.

It’s not just about playing sports; it’s also about the sportsbooks' advertising that takes place around NCAA football. Commercials are everywhere, and signage can be found throughout the college town year-round.

We compare the court’s injunction to someone picking a friend up from treatment for alcoholism and taking them to a bar to celebrate. No matter how old a person is, that will lead to relapse 99% of the time.
