DraftKings Sportsbook Extends Deal to Remain in Kansas

DraftKings Sportsbook Extends Deal to Remain in Kansas
Key Takeaways
- DraftKings and Kansas Boot Hill Casino extended retail and online partnerships
- The operator is also expanding its sports prediction markets
- The online sportsbook remains the most popular platform in the state
DraftKings Sportsbook won’t be leaving Kansas any time soon.
The sports betting giant agreed to extend its partnership with Butler National’s Boot Hill Casino & Resort. The first will keep its large retail sportsbooks in the casino active through 2030. The second extends its online sports betting deal for another ten years.
The Kansas Lottery has authorized both deals, ensuring DraftKings retail and online operators will last until at least 2030.
Boot Hill Celebrates Extensions
By extending its partnership with DraftKings, Boot Hill Casino will continue to have a significant edge in Kansas’s retail and online sports betting markets.
Casino General Manager Dyan Deutsch celebrated the extension with DraftKings in a Butler National press release and highlighted the partnership's benefits.
We appreciate the Kansas Lottery’s continued confidence in Boot Hill Casino & Resort. We are also very pleased to extend our successful relationship with DraftKings. Sports wagering has become an important component of our entertainment offering and continues to attract visitors from across Kansas and neighboring states. This extension provides long-term stability for our sports wagering platform and allows us to continue investing in the guest experience and sportsbook operations.
Commercial Terms Adjusted
While the exact details on the online sports betting deal between Boot Hill and DraftKings remain unknown, one phrase from the announcement raised some questions.
According to the Butler National press release, the online extension will include “updated commercial terms that reflect current market conditions.” While this could refer to the current state of sports betting in Kansas, it may also reference the increased competition from sports prediction markets.
DraftKings is one of the few sportsbooks that also offers a prediction market platform. It has kept sports markets out of states where its sportsbook is active. That means the operator could have walked away from the partnership and launched sports markets. Those aren’t subject to state taxes or gambling laws, allowing prediction platforms to keep far more of their profits than regulated sportsbooks.
DraftKings Remains Top Online Sportsbook
Boot Hill had plenty of reason to pursue an extension with DraftKings, which remains the most popular online sportsbook in the state. It consistently leads all operators in handle, with FanDuel only occasionally matching or surpassing the monthly revenue.
According to the Kansas Lottery’s revenue report for July, the online platform saw just under $74 million in settled wagers and $4.5 million in revenue. By comparison, FanDuel had a handle of $47.8 million and $4 million in revenue.
The next closest operator was Fanatics with a $10.3 million handle, showing the massive gap between the top two operators and the rest of the Kansas market.
