Smoke From Wildfires Could Impact Sunday’s World Cup Final

It seems Spain and Argentina may be facing a unique challenge during Sunday’s 2026 World Cup Final.

Canadian wildfires have been raging, and the smoke is now blowing straight into Northern US states. One of the states being affected is New Jersey, which is slated to host the World Cup’s final match this weekend. While experts believe the most dangerous levels will pass through before the match, it won’t completely clear.

FIFA has shared that it has no plans to postpone the match, meaning players will have to adapt.

AQI Levels Rise Into Dangerous Range

Cities like New York, Chicago, and Detroit have faced the worst air quality levels since the smoke began to blow in. Rates have surpassed 500 AQI, which qualifies as “dangerous,” meaning the majority of people will feel the effects. 

Poor air quality isn’t a new issue for the World Cup, but wildfire smoke presents a very real danger. The immediate effects can include exhaustion and shortness of breath, making it harder for players to get around the field. 

The biggest fears involve the long-term impact. While players may not contract a serious illness, the damage they’ll be doing to their lungs will last forever. That may not be a problem while they are young, but could become a significant concern as they age. 

Argentina Could Face Bigger Challenge

Both teams will face the same breathing conditions on Sunday, but that doesn’t mean the playing field will be level.

Spain’s success stems from its style of play, with the team moving quickly and seeking to dominate possession. The young team keeps constant pressure on their opponents, especially after taking the lead. It's made them one of the best-conditioned teams, which will work to their advantage on Sunday. 

As good as Argentina is, they have one of the oldest rosters in the tournament. That would make keeping up with Spain, even on the best of days, difficult. Add in the possibility of poor breathing, and it's hard to imagine how Argentina can compete with the European champ. 

Smoke Doesn’t Scare Off Spain

The Spanish Football Association isn’t going to let a little smoke get in their way.

The team surprised many by heading out to practice outside on Thursday. It was held in East Hanover, NJ, which is close to where the Final will be played. While restrictions on public attendance at practice prevent us from knowing the pace or timing, the team was scheduled to be out on the pitch for hours.

Medical experts ripped the decision as unnecessary risk, wondering why the team didn’t opt to practice further south like Argentina. However, it seems the goal is to help players adapt to the unique challenge. While the strategy carries risks for players and staff, it could make a massive difference if smoke levels remain high on Sunday.
