Key Takeaways

  • Evaluators’ next task is to determine if Jones was sane at the time of the crime
  • Police arrested Jones the next morning 170 miles away

A San Antonio man accused of fatally shooting two individuals and wounding five others at a Texas casino was found competent to stand trial.

Keryan Rashad Jones, 35, was charged with murder, capital murder of multiple persons and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He was being held on a $5.1 million bond in Maverick County.

Jones will complete an insanity exam before trial to determine he was legally sane at the time of the incident.

293rd District Court Judge Maribel Flores this week determined that Jones had completed a psychological exam that greenlighted him for a trial, according to KSAT-TV. The test effectively determined that Jones was aware of and understood the charges that were presented to him.

Jones was placed in handcuffs in late Sept. 2025 after he allegedly shot and killed mother-of-five Alicia “Daniela” Sanchez, a resident of nearby Dimmitt County, and former Border Patrol agent Marcus Antley.

The incident happened at the Kickapoo Lucky Eagle Casino in Eagle Pass, right on the Rio Grande River separating the U.S. and Mexican borders.

The Kickapoo Traditional Tribe of Texas Police Department said in a previous statement that the five other injured individuals were taken to medical facilities in Eagle Pass and San Antonio.

Jones was later found and arrested in Wilson County, about 170 miles away from where the shooting occurred. He was then extradited back to Maverick County, which includes Eagle Pass.

Much still to be determined

Many of the details of the incident, including the motive behind the alleged crimes, remain unclear.

The Kickapoo Police responded to the casino just before midnight on Sept. 27. They found seven people with gunshot wounds near a crosswalk and a walking path outside of the casino’s main entrance, according to an arrest affidavit.

First responders provided medical attention to the wounded but could not save Sanchez or Antley. Meanwhile, police drove off looking for the black Nissan Frontier that Jones was believed to be driving.

The accused was tracked down in Wilson County the next morning, at which time he was promptly arrested. The casino opened for business six days after the shooting on Oct. 3.

Maverick County Sheriff Tom Schmerber confirmed on Oct. 8 that the bond had been set at the $5.1 million amount.

Jones’ next hearing is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. local time on June 3.
