AGCO Hits Booming Games With CA$70,000 Auto-Play Fine

The Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) has penalized Booming Games (Malta) Limited CA$70,000, close to US$50,000. Investigators found a prohibited auto-play feature active on several slot titles, and Ontario players had access to the banned function for months. Auto-play lets a slot run consecutive spins without the player's input. Ontario's game-design standards explicitly forbid this feature on slot machines. The AGCO said its compliance team caught the breach through routine, targeted checks. Once notified, the affected operator disabled auto-play on the games in question. Booming Games retains the right to challenge the penalty through the appeals process.

The Two Specific Standards Booming Games Broke

AGCO investigators determined that Booming Games mishandled several titles before and after its Ontario launch. Regulators said the company failed to configure, test, and monitor certain games properly. As a registered supplier, Booming Games must ensure its products continuously meet provincial standards. This responsibility extends from initial approval through the entire operational lifecycle of each game.

The penalty adds to a string of recent gaming-industry fines, including a $7.2 million Nevada penalty against the Venetian over compliance failures. This penalty cites two specific violations under the Registrar's Standards for Internet Gaming. One breach involved supplying slot games containing auto-play functionality, contrary to Standard 2.16. The second concerned inadequate ongoing monitoring and testing, a violation of Standard 4.09. Together, these failures meant the games could not be shown to operate as originally approved by regulators.

Why Ontario's Slot Design Rules Are So Strict

Ontario maintains some of the strictest game-design rules in North America for online gambling. Auto-play is banned outright because it removes a player's need to manually start each wager. That manual step creates a deliberate pause between spins during gameplay. Regulators say this pause helps players stay aware of their spending and activity. Removing it can increase risks tied to prolonged, uninterrupted gambling sessions.

Ontario's standards also require minimum time gaps between spins to protect players. Additionally, rules prohibit game features that disguise losses as wins through misleading celebratory effects.

These design requirements embed player-protection measures directly into gambling products before they reach consumers. The AGCO frames this approach as preventive, addressing risks before players ever encounter them.

CEO's Warning and Booming Games' Appeal Path

Dr. Karin Schnarr, the AGCO's Chief Executive Officer and Registrar, addressed the penalty directly. She said Ontario's game design standards are "fundamental player-protection measures," not optional requirements. Schnarr added that registered suppliers must maintain "effective controls" to keep prohibited features away from players. She warned that the AGCO "will take regulatory action" when those safeguards fail.

Booming Games has 15 days to request a hearing before Ontario's License Appeal Tribunal. That tribunal operates independently from the AGCO within the broader Tribunals Ontario system. The case adds to a pattern of AGCO enforcement actions against gaming suppliers this year. Regulators have signaled ongoing scrutiny of compliance across Ontario's regulated iGaming market.
