Alberta is days away from a landmark moment in Canadian gambling history. The province will open its regulated iGaming market on July 13, 2026. Speaking at SBC Summit Canada in Toronto on Wednesday, Service Alberta Minister Dale Nally confirmed the launch is on track. He outlined a framework built on player protection, responsible regulation, and economic opportunity, positioning Alberta as a major new player in North America's online gambling space.

Why Alberta Chose Regulation Over Prohibition

Nally was clear that regulation, not prohibition, is the only realistic path forward. "The reality is simple: Albertans are already gambling online," he said. "The question was never whether online gambling existed. The question was whether it would happen in a regulated environment with strong standards, clear oversight, and meaningful player protections."

Around 70% of online gambling in Alberta currently takes place with unregulated operators. The new framework introduces provincially authorized private-sector sportsbooks and casino sites to redirect that activity toward regulated operators.

Alberta's structure mirrors Ontario's model, which generated over CA$4 billion in revenue last year. The Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Commission will regulate the market, while the newly appointed permanent CEO of the Alberta iGaming Corporation, Dan Keene, will oversee operator conduct.

How Alberta Plans to Keep Players Safe

Player protection sits at the heart of Alberta's approach. "Player safety is going to be at the forefront of what we do," Nally said. "We want to make it as difficult as possible for anyone who is struggling with gambling." From day one, players will have access to a province-wide self-exclusion system and financial and time-based limit tools. Operators will fund intensive outpatient therapy for players with problematic gambling behaviors. One percent of gross gaming revenue will fund responsible gambling programs. Marketing rules will prohibit content targeting minors or vulnerable individuals. Nally pointed to UK safer gambling tools as a model, which Alberta has studied closely.

Who's Joining and What Alberta Stands to Earn

Alberta's business-friendly environment has drawn considerable operator interest. Thirty-seven operators have already paid registration fees, and as many as 70 are expected to enter the market. Major operators, including FanDuel, DraftKings, BetMGM, Caesars Entertainment, and PointsBet, have confirmed their participation. "If you like your experience in Ontario, you are going to love your experience in Alberta, so please come," Nally said.

The market is projected to generate CA$1.35 billion in revenue. The government will retain roughly 20% of revenue after deductions. Two percent of gross gaming revenue will go to First Nations communities. Nally said the commitment dates to 2019, fulfilling a pledge on economic reconciliation made when the government took office.
