Key Takeaways

  • Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves is the first game in this series since 1999
  • SNK announced the SNK World Championship 2025, but no lineup, date, or location was announced
  • The prize pool is $2.5 million

SNK, the developer of Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves, has announced the SNK World Championship 2025 with $2.5 million up for grabs.

First Title In The Series In A Decade

With Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves coming out, this is the first game in the series this century.

The last one?

Garou: Mark of the Wolves was released in 1999 on the Neo Geo and later ported to Dreamcast, PlayStation 2, Xbox, and more.

Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves was released on April 24, 2025, on PlayStation 5, PC, and Xbox Series.

Now, it joins the esports scene alongside other fighting game titans, like Street Fighter 6.

Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves X Announcement

The Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves account announced the tournament on X.

“The titles for the SNK World Championship 2025, a global tournament dedicated to SNK fighting games, have been finalized!

“City of the Wolves alone will have a total prize pool of $2,500,000; the champion will walk away with $1,500,000!

“More information about prizing, qualifier schedules, and so on will be released soon. Don't miss this opportunity!”

Right now, there’s no exact date other than the graphic, which reads “Late 2025.”

We also don’t know what the lineup or location is.

At $2.5 million, this is more than other fighting game events like the Capcom Cup Pro Tour, which has had prize pools as high as $2 million.

With the increased prize pool, it begs the question: Will Street Fighter 6 pros give this one a chance? We see this happen in other genres, such as Counter-Strike pros trying out VALORANT, Overwatch, and more.

Fans React On X

In response to the X post, some fans seemed excited about this event.

“Now this is what I like to see. Devs breeding competition with these prize pools & enticing more players to take a run for the money,” one person wrote.

However, some are concerned that the game’s quality isn’t high enough and are wondering why the cash wasn’t invested into the game more.

“...a shame that all this investment wasn't made within the game itself, which is a game with very simple options and an outdated look compared to its competitors. Everything in this game smells low budget except the marketing around it. I feel cheated,” someone else wrote.

This is the latest esports tournament announced, following FragPunk's $200k event, set to take place from April 28 to June 7.
