Key Takeaways

  • FIFA President Infantino said Iran would “for sure” play this summer
  • The White House has confirmed it plans on hosting Iran for the World Cup
  • Iran has yet to confirm its participation

After weeks of uncertainty, it appears Iran’s national team will be traveling to the US this summer.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has said that Iran will “for sure” play in the 2026 World Cup as scheduled. That means their matches will be held in the US, despite the military conflict between the two nations. The White House also confirmed that it expects Iran to send its team to play matches in California and Washington.

Iranian soccer officials have said they would only participate if their matches were moved to Mexico. They have yet to confirm the reports from the White House and FIFA.

Peace opens the door, but will it last?

Iran’s World Cup status came into question last month when the US launched strikes against the nation. Recent ceasefires have helped bring some peace, opening the door for Iran to reverse its decision and send its team to the tournament this summer.

While the promise of peace now exists, there is plenty of reason to worry it won’t last. There are several groups involved, and a single attack could once again escalate the conflict. If that happens, it would almost guarantee a boycott from Iran.

Can we trust reports from FIFA and the White House?

As much as we’d love to see Iran play this summer, there is a reason why we aren’t ready to celebrate quite yet.

The reports on Iran have come from two sources that many don’t trust. FIFA’s Infantino has been under fire as fans continue to see staggering costs to attend this year’s World Cup. He had promised affordable options for fans, who instead were forced to spend thousands of dollars on tickets, hotels, and transportation.

The current administration in the White House has also lost much of its credibility over the last year. That makes it hard to trust their reports on Iran, especially with President Trump recently refusing to guarantee the safety of Iran’s team.

As a result, we are waiting on Iran to confirm its status before celebrating.

Iran may be the tournament's most important team

As intriguing as the story around Iran’s World Cup plans has been, the team faced long odds to advance past the group stage. Soccer betting sites have them as a favorite to beat New Zealand in their opening match, but don’t see them beating Egypt or Belgium.

However, there is an argument that Iran will be the most important team in the 2026 World Cup.

FIFA’s confidence that Iran will participate means there isn’t a backup plan in place. Originally, there was a belief that the league could award Italy or another nation with Iran’s spot in the tournament. However, that no longer seems realistic as the tournament kicks off in less than two months.

If FIFA is wrong and Iran decides it doesn’t want to make the trip, it would create chaos. One group would suddenly be short a team and would need to refund the thousands of fans who bought high-priced tickets for Iran’s matches.

That would spell disaster for this historic World Cup, and could force change at the top of FIFA.
