A man in a suburb just north of Detroit, Michigan, is accused of killing his mother and using her money to gamble at a nearby casino.

James Robert Hall, 39, was charged for allegedly murdering his mother after she criticized his life choices, police said. The victim, identified as 59-year-old Kristine Lynn Hall, was found in her bed on Nov. 25.

The younger Hall faces a maximum of life in prison without the possibility of parole.

What happened at the scene?

Officers from the Holly Police Department arrived at the home of the deceased, where they were greeted by her brother. He informed them that he and his mother had attempted to call the woman, but she uncharacteristically had not answered.

The brother also claimed the two had been together the day before and had plans to meet that day.

When she didn’t return his calls, he drove to her home and found her vehicle missing. The confused brother unsuccessfully tried to enter through the locked front door, and eventually kicked down the back door. That’s when he found her dead in her bed.

Police said that the woman was fully clothed with no immediately evident signs of a struggle. However, a closer examination revealed bruising on her neck and signs of an altercation.

A press release from the police said that the brother claimed the victim, who had allowed James Hall to move in less than one year before, was afraid of him. She allegedly slept with her door locked at night and didn’t allow him to drive her vehicle.

James Hall also had an active warrant for breaking and entering with intent.

Updating the charges

Early in the investigation, the authorities were alerted that the missing vehicle had been spotted in Jackson. The victim’s daughter also told the police that she had spoken to her father, who said that James had admitted to killing his mother.

Officers were later dispatched to a Kalamazoo party store after a clerk informed them that a man using the store’s phone claimed he was having suicidal thoughts. That man was James, who was found with his mother’s car in the parking lot.

Hall allegedly confessed to the murder and was taken to the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety Jail.

According to his statement, he entered her bedroom, when she began chewing him out for his life decisions. He grabbed a pillow and smothered her until she stopped breathing, took her money and jewelry, and fled the scene in her car, eventually making a stop at a nearby casino.

"James Hall was angry his mother was parenting him…so he killed her,” Holly Police Chief Jerry Narsh said. “He took the life... that gave him life. Then, he took her money, her jewelry and her vehicle because he was challenged on his life choices.”

Hall was initially given a $100,000 bond after being arrested for breaking and entering. He was arraigned on Wednesday, Dec. 10, for first-degree murder, unlawful driving away of a motor vehicle, and larceny in a building.

He was denied bond.

This tragic incident is another in a string of recent tragedies involving or near casinos, specifically, two in Maryland.
