A 25-year-old man who stabbed two employees at Red Rock Casino Resort & Spa in Las Vegas has been sentenced to up to 20 years in prison.
This comes after the man, Shayne Sussman, pled guilty to the charges in October.
Sussman has been ordered to spend between eight and 20 years in prison for the Aug. 3, 2024 attack.
He will get credit for the 131 days he’s already spent in jail.
He’ll also need to pay a total of $4,800 in restitution, with $2,000 going to one victim and $2,800 to the other.
This stemmed from an incident in which Sussman was intoxicated, attacked a maintenance worker at Red Rocks, and stabbed another worker. In the initial assault, Sussman stabbed the employee in the back, lungs, collarbone, and neck.
Sussman initially fled the scene but was noticed by a security guard outside a restaurant.
“I saw him, and he just didn’t look right,” security guard Chance Sanders testified before a grand jury hearing the case, according to KTNV.
“When he sat himself down, he did not sit himself down like a normal human being would, somebody in the right state of mind. He kind of plopped himself down, and then his head was cocked awkwardly on the decor behind him, and it just looked extremely uncomfortable.”
Sanders initially went to check on Sussman but noticed he had a pocket knife. Sussman initially went after Sanders, but then ran.
“The second I touched him, his whole body tensed up, and he spun around, and with a 360-back spin, and that knife came right at my head,” Sanders further told the grand jury.
“The light is shining off of it and everything — and by the grace of God, I don’t know how, but somehow I ducked,” he added.
From there, another security guard shot Sussman, who was transported to University Medical Center for medical assistance.
His blood alcohol came in at .25%, or three times the legal limit in Nevada.
While testifying before the grand jury, Sanders recounted the experiences he’s had since the incident.
“Once I was finally able to sleep for about a week following the incident, I would wake up crying,” Sanders said in court, Las Vegas TV station KLAS reported.
“I wasn’t sure why, but it was overwhelming — and I found myself looking up towards heaven and saying ‘thank you.’”
In addition to the experience Sanders endured, guests at the casino hid under tables during the encounter.
