Noahki Banks Running Out of Time to Choose His National Team

The US men’s national team will kick off the World Cup in June, but their future may largely be decided in May.

American-born Noahki Banks is one of the most promising young players in the world. The 19-year-old has come up through the ranks playing for US teams and has spoken fondly of his time there. However, the defender shared his plans to pursue a role with Germany’s national team. 

USMNT coach Mauricio Pochettino isn’t giving up on the young star, continuing to leave a World Cup roster spot open and remaining supportive.

That means Banks will soon be forced to decide a big part of his and the USMNT's future.

US Offers Chance at Instant Glory

The biggest temptation for Banks to join the US is the chance to play in the 2026 World Cup. While he’d need to earn time, Pochettino has not shied away from offering him a spot on this year’s squad. That means he could not only participate in his first FIFA World Cup, but also do so on American soil.

In addition to playing time, Banks also has strong relationships with several USMNT players and coaches. He has spoken fondly of his team with the team, leading many to believe the decision would be any easy one. 

The whole camp was great. The way the players welcomed me, the way they made my life easy, was very cool, to be honest. Tim Ream, [on] the first day of training, helped me a lot. He also plays my position, so he coached me a lot and helped me get into training and into the new tactics. Obviously, it was a bit new, but all the older guys at dinner said to come sit at their table. It was great.

Germany Offers More Challenges, Rewards

If Banks chooses to dedicate himself to Germany’s national team, he won’t have a chance to play in the World Cup until 2030. 

The country has one of the world’s top programs, currently ranked tenth in FIFA’s 2026 World Ranking and listed as a favorite to win the World Cup on many soccer betting sites. The roster is filled with stars from the world’s biggest leagues, meaning no room for Banks. 

While he would likely be on the team in 2030, the depth of German talent makes that far from a guarantee.

While the challenge will be far greater with Germany, so will the rewards. The program has four World Cup titles, with the last coming in 2014. It also features a fanbase that lives and breathes soccer, which is something the US can’t match. That means the glory and fame could be far greater with the German team.

Other Factors Will Influence Choice

While Banks is American by birth, he was born in Honolulu, Hawaii. The island state has a complicated history with its country, making patriotism and national pride far less prevalent than in the continental US. That alone makes the 19-year-old's decision more complicated, especially given the tumultuous state of American politics.

It’s also important to consider that Banks’ mother is German, which led him to pursue youth academies there at a young age. He came up through those academies well, eventually earning a place with Bundesliga club FC Augsburg. While he continued in the USMNT youth programs, his pro career has developed in Germany.

One last factor to consider is the strained geopolitical tensions between the US and Germany. The allies have fallen out while US President Trump has been in office, with Germany critical of the controversial leader. This could make him an unwilling political figure and place even greater importance on his decision.
