Nigeria, Congo Await Ruling From FIFA Over World Cup Status

One of the biggest news stories surrounding the 2026 FIFA World Cup involves two African nations battling for their spot.

FIFA is currently reviewing allegations filed by Nigeria regarding a World Cup qualifying match against DR Congo on November 16. Congo won the match on penalty kicks, sealing its qualification for the international playoffs. However, Nigeria is accusing its rival of using ineligible players during the match, which should result in a forfeit. 

FIFA currently has DR Congo on the schedule for the playoffs later this month, with a bye into the finals. However, it has not officially ruled on Nigeria’s challenge.

Fans Hope for a Miracle for Nigeria

While FIFA has not yet released its ruling, the addition of Congo to the playoff schedule has dampened Nigeria fans' hopes. The move may seem small, but many fear it is confirmation that the league has already made its decision. 

While fans are nervous, National Sports Commission Chairman Shehu Dikko remains confident FIFA will side with Nigeria. 

The fact that DR Congo appears among the six nations to compete for the final two spots in the playoff is not enough to jump to the conclusion that FIFA has thrown out Nigeria’s petition. Some nations are also preparing for friendly matches. Things will change as soon as the FIFA verdict comes out.

Nigeria Would be Favored to Qualify

While soccer betting sites won’t have Nigeria or the Congo winning much at the World Cup, qualifying would be a massive win for both fanbases. With the path to qualification being favorable, both countries know just how important that last playoff spot is. 

The intercontinental playoff field is determined by the FIFA World Rankings. As of now, the Congo (48th) and Iraq (58) are the highest-ranked remaining, earning them a bye into the final. That means both are just one win away from punching their ticket to the World Cup. 

Nigeria is currently ranked 26th, making its team an overwhelming favorite to advance if FIFA rules in its favor.

Official Ruling Must Come Soon

FIFA set the internet ablaze by adding Congo to the international playoff schedule. Many major outlets treated it as confirmation of the league’s ruling, but Nigerian officials continue to insist the protest remains under review.

While the public pressure will be on FIFA to provide a ruling soon, the league doesn’t have a choice. The playoffs are set to begin at the end of the month, and teams will need time to prepare and arrange travel. That has us expecting an official ruling to come next week.
