NPCG Believes Study is Crucial
While studies on problem gambling have been common, none have focused on members of the US military. The NPCG believes this is a high-risk group, making more research critical to keeping them safe. The responsible gaming group shared this information in a recent letter to Senators Mitch McConnell from Kentucky and Chris Coons from Delaware.
“Despite the high prevalence and risk of gambling addiction amongst our service members and veterans, there is a lack of comprehensive research on how to best treat, intervene, and prevent this mental health issue within the military population,” the NPCG’s letter read. “Strong bipartisan support for gambling addiction research for improved screening, treatment, and recovery will allow for lifesaving efforts for many of your constituents who have chosen to serve our country and their families.”
Vets Already Face Difficult Hurdles
Problem gambling is just one of many issues that active and former military members face. Studies have confirmed that they are at a higher risk for homelessness, depression, alcoholism, and suicide.
The fear is that problem gambling can exacerbate those issues. While most online sportsbook operators have responsible gaming protocols in place, they are far from perfect. With the industry evolving, it’s likely to take years and possibly decades to help resolve (or at least effectively curb) the issue.
Study Could Have Massive Impact
If the study receives funding, it has the potential to have a massive impact early on. That’s because many active and former military personnel have robust support systems in place. This includes government programs, support groups, specialized mental health programs, and more.
The study could also help sportsbooks better identify problem gambling among members. This could change protocols and help boost programs for civilians as well.
There is no simple solution to this problem, but the study could represent a critical first step.
