NCPG Leaves Ugly Legal Fight Behind
While the NCPG has offered a problem gambling hotline for years, it was recently forced to cease those operations.
The Council on Compulsive Gambling of New Jersey (CCGNJ) decided not to renew its agreement with the NCPG to lease the 1-800-GAMBLER hotline last year. It led to a contentious legal battle between the two groups, with the NCPG claiming the smaller CCGNJ would be unable to handle the volume of calls for a national hotline.
The NCPG’s new hotline will give it a chance to compete with the CCGNJ on a level playing field where both can do the most good.
Perfect Timing for 1-800-MY-RESET Launch
The NCPG’s new hotline comes at a perfect time. Super Bowl LX is right around the corner, and will be the first one residents from all 50 states can legally wager on.
That’s due to the sports prediction industry, which has grown fast since last year’s game. Several new major operators will be available across the US, including in non-betting states like California and Texas. They will offer standard markets, player props, and even parlay or “combos.”
With a new wave of bettors coming, the NCPG’s new hotline will help prevent other national resources from being overwhelmed by the potential influx of requests after this year’s big NFL game.
NCPG Emphasizes Help For Families
In announcing the new hotline, the NCPG made it clear that the resource was for anyone affected by gambling addiction. That includes friends and families seeking help for loved ones suffering from gambling addiction.
“Problem gambling support should never be limited to a single moment or a single definition of harm,” NCPG Board President Derek Longmeier shared in a press release. “1-800-MY-RESET reinforces that the National Problem Gambling Helpline is available at any stage—whether someone is worried about themselves, concerned about a family member, or simply looking for trusted guidance. Making the Helpline number easier to remember is a practical, meaningful step toward reducing barriers to care.”
