Bill Would Unlock Resources to Fight Problem Gambling
If passed, SB0118 would unlock resources to address the growing problem. The DHS could use funds from the tax revenue generated by regulated sports betting. This would include setting up programs, ad campaigns, and other tools dedicated to helping people struggling with gambling addiction.
“The effects on public safety and the criminal justice system cause serious social and economic losses and great human suffering. It is imperative that a comprehensive and coordinated strategy be developed under the leadership of a State agency,” the bill reads.
Bill Also Addresses Gambling Addiction with Minors
Another key aspect of the bill is aimed at addressing problem gambling among minors. The DHS would be able to create programs for parents, helping them speak to their kids about problem gambling. It would also teach them about the symptoms of a gambling addiction to stop the problem from an early age.
The focus on underage gambling could have a significant impact. It seems more minors are finding ways to wager on sports, but they don’t necessarily have the same access to problem gambling resources. Because those bettors are wagering illegally and without their parents’ permission, many feel trapped and unable to discuss the issue.
Expansion of Regulated Gaming Also Proposed
SB0118's proposal comes as the state considers legalizing online casinos. A pair of companion bills have been introduced into the Senate and House to legalize the industry, further expanding regulated gambling in the state.
Another bill being considered would ban sweepstakes games in the state. While these free-to-play platforms can trigger problem gambling, the risk is far less than with a sportsbook. As a result, people worried about overspending on gambling have flocked to sweepstakes platforms to feel the thrill of gambling safely.
If the state legalizes online casinos and bans sweepstakes operators, it will need to find a way to fight another spike in problem gambling.
