Rising Interest in Alberta's iGaming Market
Alberta's impending regulated iGaming market launch is attracting considerable attention from international operators. This positions it as Canada's second competitive online gambling jurisdiction after Ontario.
PointsBet Canada has taken the lead, officially launching its customer acquisition efforts by registering with Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis (AGLC) and opening pre-registration for residents.
The initiative aligns with AGLC's standards, allowing operators to advertise and enroll customers, though actual deposits and wagers will be delayed until the official market launch. Additionally, Rush Street Interactive has applied for a license for its BetRivers platform. CEO Richard Shwartz expressed enthusiasm for the expansion, noting, "This represents a significant online casino opportunity that leverages our proven success in similar markets, such as Ontario."
US Operators Eye Alberta
Several major US gaming companies are positioning themselves to enter Alberta's emerging iGaming market. Notable names such as PENN Entertainment's theScore Bet, FanDuel, DraftKings, Betway, Caesars Entertainment, and BetMGM are all looking to expand their Canadian footprint across various gaming sectors.
The companies' familiarity in Ontario is expected to facilitate a smooth transition into Alberta, allowing them to capitalize on established platforms and expertise. In Alberta, these operators will have the chance to offer diverse gaming products under a single license, including online poker and sports betting, while committing to responsible gaming.
Ontario's Regulatory Strength Faces World Cup Test
Ontario's iGaming market, now three years old, is on the brink of a critical challenge with the 2026 World Cup approaching. Regulators are under pressure to demonstrate that Canada can maintain a responsible gaming environment. The Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) has signaled that leniency in regulation is no longer acceptable. This is evidenced by their recent $350,000 fine against FanDuel over suspicious bets.
