Key Takeaways

  • Xbox reveals Project Helix, the codename for its next-generation gaming console
  • Microsoft Gaming CEO says the system will lead in performance and play Xbox and PC games
  • PC compatibility hints at expanded esports potential and broader game library for console players

Microsoft and Xbox fans have finally gotten a glimpse of its next-generation console.

So far, though, the only thing that's known is the codename: Project Helix.

What is Known About Project Helix Thus Far

On X, the official Xbox account shared a short teaser video with a caption reading "The next generation of Xbox console: Project Helix."

The video included some Stranger Things-like-sounding synth music, along with a logo and the name "Project Helix." The teaser ran for just seven seconds.

In a separate X post, Asha Sharma, the new CEO of Microsoft Gaming, wrote the following:

"Great start to the morning with Team Xbox, where we talked about our commitment to the return of Xbox, including Project Helix, the code name for our next generation console.

"Project Helix will lead in performance and play your Xbox and PC games. Looking forward to chatting about this more with partners and studios at my first GDC next week!"

There's no information regarding hardware, games, pricing, or a release date, but Sharma's post indicated it would "lead in performance and play for your Xbox and PC games."

The PC games portion of that will certainly raise some eyebrows, but it's not the first device of theirs to combine PC and Xbox games, as ROG Xbox Ally supported titles via Steam.

Project Helix and Esports

With PC games being involved in Project Helix, this could open the door for console players to try titles like Counter-Strike 2, and the competitive scene could grow.

That said, PCs have long been the standard in tournaments, as consoles cannot compete with high-performance PCs.

That said, if what Sharma says is true, it could perhaps be on par with that high-performing PC.

Something else that'll be curious is how Project Helix interacts with things like a mouse and keyboard, something Xbox Series X/S allows, but only with certain games.

We'll be sure to provide more information once more about Project Helix is revealed.
