Key Takeaways

  • The Esports Integrity Commission ruled that Firefly won't compete at the Esports World Cup 2025
  • In his place will be Huang "Lancer" Min, who will also be replaced in the Global Qualifier by Taiwanese pro, Lemon
  • This comes after a former player, Jim, released evidence regarding claims that he and Firefly were involved in match-fixing in 2023

Ahead of the Esports World Cup and other tournaments, Starcraft II pro Xue "Firefly" Tao has been "provisionally suspended."

A provisional suspension means that the player is temporarily banned while an investigation or disciplinary process is underway.

Fireflay, a Chinese pro, will now not be able to play in the Esports World Cup 2025, as ruled by the Esports Integrity Commission (ESIC).

New Player Will Take His Spot

With the ESIC ruling that Firefly is unable to play, Huang "Lacer" Min will take his spot during the main event, which occurs from July 22 to 25 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Lacer will compete on behalf of JD Gaming. He was the runner-up to Firelay in the Asia Qualifier.

Now, instead of getting a spot in the Global Qualifier, he'll be part of the 18-player lineup with $700,000 on the line.

EWC Provides Comment

On X, the EWC, via the account @EWC_Extra, released a statement.

“Following a preliminary investigation by the Esports Integrity Commission, ESIC has advised all tournament operators that StarCraft II competitor Xue ‘Firefly’ Tao has been provisionally suspended from competition pending finalisation of the investigation,” it started.

With Lancer out of the Global Qualifier, Lemon, on Taiwan, will advance and compete in the qualifier on June 21 and 22. Four players will earn a spot in the main event.

“Due to the volume and quality of evidence ESIC has received, ESIC has issued Firefly with a provisional suspension pending conclusion of its investigation into breaches of the ESIC Integrity Programme,” said the commission. No details have yet to be released.

Why Was Firefly Suspended?

On the Chinese forum scboy, a former play, Cao "Jim" Jinhui, he said that he and Firefly were allegedly involved in match-fixing in 2023.

Jim has claimed that Firefly owed him money, but refused to pay him back. Thus, Jim responded by releasing evidence regarding his claims.

In May, the ESIC hit ATO X Esports with bans ranging from eight months to a lifetime for their match-fixing allegations.

This news comes just after Cristiano Ronaldo was announced as the Global Ambassador for the event.
