Opera GX, the gaming web browser, has announced a partnership with the geography guessing game GeoGuessr.
With this deal, Opera GX will be the official web browser of the 2025 GeoGuessr World Championship.
As the official web browser, Opera GX will be used to power the entire championship. Players will also have access to GX Control, which is a feature used to optimize resources for the best performance possible while playing GeoGuessr, which is a browser-based game.
Also, Opera GX will create a dedicated avatar within the game. All avatar sales will go toward the prize pool.
The prize pool will begin at $100,000.
In October 2024, Opera GX partnered with BLAST for the BLAST Premier World Final. Also, in September, they linked up with Riot Games.
Speaking of BLAST, they recently partnered with Alienware ahead of the Blast.TV Austin Major 2025.
The prize pool will begin at $100,000.
“Our partnership with Geoguessr’s World Championship is a natural fit,” said Opera GX's Product Director, Maciej Kocemba. “2GX offers the customisation, control, and browsing features that match the way players engage with games and gaming culture. We are excited to see how this year’s competition plays out.”
GeoGuessr has held consistent esports competitions since the GeoGuessr Team World Cup in 2022.
The 2024 World Championship peaked at 254,000 viewers, which was three times the amount of the 2023 iteration.
For the 2025 iteration, there will be three Major events in Tokyo, Dallas (Texas), and Jönköping before the World Finals in Copenhagen from August 29 to 30.
By the time we get to the World Finals, there’ll be 16 players who are determined through the Majors.
It’s also safe to say that YouTuber Rainbolt has helped bring a lot of awareness to GeoGuessr. He often has celebrity guests playing the game. He has two channels with a combined 2.74 million subscribers.
