Key Takeaways

  • The OCCC placed a bettor on the involuntary exclusion list for harassment
  • He was recorded making threats towards manager John Schneider
  • The ban does not cover sports prediction markets.

The Buckeye State is cracking down on harassment from angry bettors.

The Ohio Casino Control Commission has placed a Thornville man on the involuntary exclusion list for sports betting. The ban will keep him from betting in person and online in the state’s regulated market indefinitely. The commission issued the ruling at a meeting and made the ban effective immediately.

The now-banned bettor has denied the charges and confirmed he has already started appealing the OCCC’s decision.

MLB Manager Targeted

According to the OCCC, the accused called Major League Baseball’s customer service line during Game 4 of the 2025 World Series. On the call, he made several threats toward Toronto Blue Jays manager John Schneider. The conversation lasted about 14 minutes, and MLB recorded it.

The angry bettor told an MLB customer service agent that Schneider had lied about his game strategy and accused him of participating in some type of gambling scheme. According to a transcript ESPN obtained, he ended by threatening to take action himself.

We've got his address, we've got all of his information ... if you don't do something about it then we're going to deal with your manager.

OCCC Makes a Statement

The bettors in question claim his words stemmed from his own frustration and didn’t signal an intent to take action. He didn’t plan to travel to find the manager, and no evidence showed he threatened Schneider directly.

While the threats weren’t direct, they were still made. As a result, the OCCC decided to move forward with the maximum punishment. The regulator hopes this will send a message to other bettors that it won’t tolerate any form of harassment.

The MLB also banned the bettors from attending games and venues two days after the threatening call.

Prediction Markets Negate Ban

The OCCC’s ban only covers the state’s regulated sports betting market. That means sports prediction markets can still accept “trades” from bettors, including on MLB and even the Toronto Blue Jays.

While Ohio is trying to shut down sports markets within its borders, several platforms have refused to comply. As a result, banned bettors will have plenty of options to keep wagering on MLB.

This leaves a massive hole in the effectiveness of the OCCC’s ban. However, prediction platforms could back the regulator with their own bans.

Industry giants like Kalshi and Polymarket have been looking to quell fears over sports markets as public opinion continues to turn against them. The effort aims to show their ability and willingness to help fight issues like problem gambling and harassment.

By backing the OCCC’s ban, the industry could earn a major boost in public opinion as it continues to face an uncertain future.
