League Celebrates Partnership
The NFL did not waste time celebrating its deal with the ICRG. League leadership shared their commitment to promoting responsible gambling and creating a safer environment for athletes and bettors alike.
“We’re proud to partner with the ICRG to advance research that can drive meaningful solutions and address a critical gap in the understanding of gambling behaviors among college athletes and students,” the NFL SVP of Social Responsibility said of the partnership. “This initiative reflects our ongoing commitment to promoting responsible gambling and fostering a safe and supportive environment for athletes, fans, and communities.”
Will Stopping Problem Betting Early Help?
State and federal lawmakers have been unable to find a way to stop the rapid growth of problem gambling in the US. While the spike was expected once the industry became legal, the impact has been even more significant than anticipated.
With many previous efforts to promote responsible gambling having a minimal impact or failing altogether, many have turned their focus on college-aged bettors. The hope is that helping to promote responsible gaming habits at a young age will prevent bettors from forming gambling addictions later in life.
This strategy won’t have an immediate impact, but it could serve as a long-term solution that many advocates have been seeking.
Athlete Safety Also a Priority
The rise in problem gambling has also led to a spike in the harassment of pro and college athletes. We have seen angry bettors verbally abuse athletes at games, on social media, or through phone calls and text messages. Many times, the abusers have been betting beyond their financial means, making losses feel far more painful.
Many states have begun to pass laws to increase punishments for bettors who harass athletes, but the problem has continued. The hope is that curbing problem gambling will also help cut down on these unfortunate incidents.
