Key Takeaways

  • RealPrize is leaving New Jersey, Louisiana, and Delaware
  • New Jersey legislation against sweepstakes casinos is likely to be signed or approved by Aug. 14
  • Louisiana sent 42 cease-and-desist letters, but RealPrize wasn't among the recipients

RealPrize, one of the more popular sweepstakes casinos, has decided to leave three states: Louisiana, Delaware, and New Jersey.

RealPrize is currently unavailable in Connecticut, Idaho, Michigan, Montana, Nevada, New York, and Washington, as well as the three new states.

Leaving Louisiana

RealPrize is leaving Louisiana despite not being one of the 42 platforms to receive a cease-and-desist letter

Louisiana passed legislation earlier this year banning sweepstakes casinos, but Governor Jeff Landry vetoed it, saying it was unnecessary and within the right of the state and the Louisiana Gaming Control Board to go after these platforms anyway.

Additionally, Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill published a legal opinion threatening legal action, including “injunctive relief, restitution, disgorgement of profits, sequestration of assets, and civil penalties.”

So, while RealPrize didn't receive a notice, it may have only been a matter of time.

Leaving New Jersey

Like Louisiana, New Jersey also passed legislation to ban sweepstakes casinos with AB 5447. Governor Phil Murphy has 45 days to veto or sign the bill. If he fails to do either, it would go to a pocket approval.

The legislation was passed on June 30, meaning Aug. 14 is the final day.

By then, this bill will likely be approved and go into effect almost immediately.

RealPrize follows sites like Funzpoints, Spree, MyPrize.us, and more to flee the state.

Leaving Delaware

In February 2023, Delaware sent out cease-and-desist notices to sweepstakes casinos. It included a notice to Virtual Gaming Worlds, the biggest sweepstakes casino operator.

Since then, sweepstakes casinos have been leaving the state. It could be for several reasons, including receiving notices that the public is unaware of, following VGW's lead, and simply wanting to avoid any legal battles with the state.
