Events Adjustments
Organizers postponed the PRCA Permit Challenge indefinitely due to outbreak risks. The main Wrangler NFR (December 4-13) remains as planned under strict protocols, including 7-day Certificates of Veterinary Inspection, Nevada entry permits, daily temperature monitoring, onsite quarantines, and a ban on participants’ travel to other events.
Enhanced Biosecurity Protocols
Organizers maintain the Wrangler NFR can proceed under strict quarantine measures, requiring competitors to provide veterinary inspection certificates issued within seven days and secure Nevada agriculture entry permits. Horses at the Thomas & Mack Center undergo daily temperature monitoring and remain confined to the venue to prevent contact with the outside.
The outbreak was traced to November’s Women’s Professional Rodeo World Finals in Waco, Texas. The Barrel Futurities of America (BFA) World Championship in Guthrie, Okla, was cancelled on the first day of competition after a positive PCR test onsite.
It has since spread across multiple US states (Texas, Oklahoma, Arizona, New Mexico, South Dakota, Colorado, Louisiana, Washington) and Canada, with 60 confirmed cases as of December 1. EHV-1 is transmitted through respiratory droplets, contaminated equipment, or direct contact, causing respiratory distress and neurological paralysis in equines.
Economic Effects
Industry experts confirm that a single EHV-1 detection during the NFR could halt the event immediately. The 10-day finals typically draw 170,000-180,000 spectators (15,000-20,000 nightly), including 100,000 out-of-state visitors. The companion “Cowboy Christmas” trade show at the Las Vegas Convention Center attracts over 200,000 additional attendees, collectively driving 400,000 visitors and $100- $150 million in direct economic impact.
