Key Takeaways

  • The shooting was unrelated to the Detroit debt
  • Offset failed to repay a $100,000 line of credit extended by MotorCity Casino
  • A Florida hospital released Offset on Friday, just a few days after he was shot

Offset’s week went from bad to worse as it was revealed that he was being sued by a Detroit casino for $100,000 at the same time he was shot outside of a Florida casino.

The former Migos member borrowed six figures from the MotorCity Casino Hotel in Michigan’s capital city, TMZ reported. The casino claimed that he opened a line of credit in March 2024, and, after maxing out the line, was unable to pay the borrowed amount.

A representative for the popular rapper told TMZ, “We are working toward a resolution.”

Offset sued over casino debt

Documents obtained by TMZ showed that MotorCity Casino attempted to get in contact with Offset, real name Kiari Kendrell Cephus, after he left the facility with $100,000 in outstanding payments. After failing to establish communication, the casino attempted to pull the money directly out of his account, as agreed by both parties when the credit was established.

That approach also failed, leading the casino to sue the Atlanta, Georgia native for breach of contract, fraud, and other charges.

The lawsuit was submitted on March 30, about one week before Offset was the victim of a shooting outside of Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Florida, just north of Miami.

"We can confirm Offset was shot and is currently at the hospital receiving medical care,” a representative for the rapper said in a statement on Monday. “He is stable and being closely monitored.”

The lawsuit adds to a growing list of supposed gambling payments owed by the pop culture icon. Former NFL star Dez Bryant posted on X on Tuesday that Offset owed him $8,000 from a lost wager, and that the rapper had asked him for a winning bet three hours before he was shot earlier in the week.Offset

New York radio legend Ebro Darden also said on The Ebro Laura Rosenberg Show that Offset owed him $5,000 from a Super Bowl bet. He later apologized for the timing of the reveal, saying that it “wasn’t in tune with what was really going on.”

Offset released after Florida casino shooting

As Offset’s losses continue to pile across friendly wagers, live-dealer table games, slot machines, and other casino amenities, he was granted a reprieve on Friday.

“Offset has been released from the hospital and he is up and walking," his representative said on Friday. "We’re incredibly grateful to the doctors, nurses, and the entire hospital staff who took such great care of him.”

The rapper found himself in the middle of a shooting following an altercation with rapper Lil Tjay, real name Tione Jayden Merritt, not affiliated with Migos, on Monday. Police suspect that the New York performer “directed members of his party to start a fight with another group of males,” resulting in the discharge of a firearm.

Lil Tjay was charged with disorderly conduct and operating a vehicle without a license. A second person who was detained at the scene was not charged.

Offset has three children with his wife, Cardi B, with whom he separated in 2024.

Offset and his former groupmate, Quavo, announced the retirement of Migos following the fatal shooting of their third member and Quavo’s nephew, Takeoff. The 28-year-old was an innocent bystander in a shooting at a Houston bowling alley.
