Clase’s Already Infamous Scandal Just Got Worse
When federal prosecutors announced charges against the pair of Cleveland Guardians pitchers, it triggered widespread panic across MLB and the sports betting industry. The prominence of the players involved generated greater public interest and cast doubt on the league's integrity.
With the most recent release, expect that panic to re-emerge quickly.
Like many closers, Clase has never appeared in more than 77 games in a season. With the 48 games spread out over just two years, prosecutors are alleging the closer manipulated pitches in about one-third of his appearances. If they can prove that volume in court, it would indicate that a large number of bettors were affected.
Spot-Fixing Not as Harmless as Many Think
One of the saving graces for the MLB has been the use of micro-betting in the Clase scandal. This is a niche form of wagering that focuses on a single moment in a game or match, such as a specific pitch. Those violations don’t affect the outcome of a game and help protect the sport’s integrity.
Unfortunately for the league, we may soon find that to be false.
Details about the 48 games are still emerging, but we know they took place between 2023 and 2025. While Clase had his best season in 2024, he had his two worst seasons in 2023 and 2025. If we find that the games involved in this scheme mostly took place during those down seasons, it may suggest the scheme affected his overall play and, therefore, the results of those games.
Clase’s Contract Brings Concerns
There has been a lot to cover involving Emmanuel Clase’s scandal, but one of the storylines not getting enough attention is the closer’s contract.
Clase was an All-Star player who earned a 5-year, $20 million contract from the Guardians in 2022. He could have added two more years on a club option, and likely had at least one more sizeable contract, considering he led all closers in ERA and finished second in saves for the 2024 season.
Clase began spot-fixing after becoming an established star in the league. If he can be swayed into risking all that for some easy payouts, stars across all US sports could do the same. That is a significant blow to the integrity of the country’s sports leagues that will be hard to shake.
