The Message From SweepsUSA
As mentioned, an email went out to California players at SweepsUSA that read as follows:
“Regarding your account deactivation, we regret to inform you that due to recent legislative changes under California Assembly Bill AB 831, our platform is no longer able to offer services to players residing in California,” the email to players read. “This new law directly impacts the type of online entertainment we provide. In order to remain compliant with all applicable state and federal regulations, we are required to discontinue access to our platform for California residents, effective immediately.
“We sincerely thank you for being a part of our community and for your support during your time with us. We truly value your trust and understanding as we navigate these new legal requirements. If you have any further questions or need assistance with your redemption, please don’t hesitate to contact us.”
In addition to SweepsUSA, platforms such as Carnival Citi, Ruby Sweeps, Dara Casino, and High 5 Casino have announced their exits from the state. High 5 Casino has altered its exit plans, but will still be leaving.
Meanwhile, sites like WOW Vegas will stay in California right up until the final moment possible.
More On AB 831
AB 831 was passed in September but not signed into law by Newsom until October.
While SweepsUSA’s message says that they are “required to discontinue access to our platform for California residents, effective immediately,” that’s not exactly accurate.
Technically, SweepsUSA could do what WOW Vegas is doing and stay until the ban goes into effect on Jan. 1, 2026.
Other States With Legislation Out There
Right now, following California, the only other two states with potential legislation on the books are Ohio and Massachusetts.
However, it’s not looking like either bill, Ohio’s House Bill 298 and Massachusetts’ House Bill 4431, will do anything this year of note.
We may have to wait until 2026 before any other legislation is passed or brought to the table.
