Key Takeaways

  • Connecticut and Maryland added to Funzpoints' excluded states list
  • Connecticut passed legislation banning sweepstakes casinos
  • Maryland sent Funzpoints a cease-and-desist notice

Funzpoints, a sweepstakes casino, has added two states to its list of excluded states: Connecticut and Maryland.

This update was made to its terms and conditions on Aug. 27.

The excluded states list now includes Connecticut, Maryland, Idaho, Nevada, New York, New Jersey, Montana, Michigan, and Louisiana.

Both Game Modes Blocked

With Connecticut and Maryland being added, this now means that playing with Standard Funzpoints and Premium Funzpoints (the site's equivalent of Gold Coins and Sweeps Coins) is unavailable.

Other operators, such as Virtual Gaming Worlds (Chumba Casino, Global Poker, LuckyLand Slots), have made decisions to pull sweepstakes play, but keep "Gold Coins play" in some states.

Reasons Behind Maryland and Connecticut Being Added to the List

Why is Funzpoints adding Connecticut and Maryland to the excluded states list?

Starting with Connecticut, this one is simple: Connecticut passed Senate Bill 1235 in June, which banned sweepstakes casinos. The Governor, Ned Lamont, signed that bill just over a week after it was passed.

It went into effect on July 1, 2025.

While the games may have been pulled before this, the terms and conditions weren't changed until Aug. 27.

Connecticut is one of three states where sweepstakes casinos are officially illegal. The others are New Jersey and Montana.

New York has passed legislation, but it has yet to be signed by Gov. Kathy Hochul.

Louisiana passed legislation, but the bill was vetoed as Governor Jeff Landry said that going after sweepstakes casinos was already within the scope of the Louisiana Gaming Control Board.

Finally, California's AB 831 recently passed in the Senate Appropriations Committee and is now headed to the Senate for a vote

As for Maryland, Woopla Inc. (which operates as Funzpoints in Maryland) received a cease-and-desist letter from Maryland's gambling regulator saying the company was “offering and conducting online gaming activities in Maryland without legal authority to do so.”

“Your failure to comply with this letter may jeopardize the ability of Funzpoints to ever be issued any type of gambling or gaming license if it seeks one in Maryland in the future," the notice also said.

Maryland has also sent cease-and-desist notices to the following sweepstakes casinos:

  • Golden Heart Games
  • VGW
  • Legendz
  • Rebet
  • McLuck
  • Pulsz
  • WOW Vegas
  • Sportzino
  • High 5 Casino
  • Stake.us
  • Fortune Coins
  • Fliff
  • Clubs Poker and Clubs Casino
